The Opportunity

NanoScience Technology Center(NSTC) and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) invite applicants for one (1) faculty position at the rank of assistant professor (tenure-earning at MSE department). The research areas of interest include but are not limited to Quantum Many-Body Simulations, Quantum Transport and Non-Equilibrium Phenomena, Strain and Defect Engineering in 2D Systems and Machine Learning for Materials Discovery.

The NanoScience Technology Center (NSTC)at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is a multidisciplinary research center established in 2004 with the mission to establish a cutting-edge research program in materials and nanotechnology, provide high quality training for students and facilitate the advance of innovations to solve real world technology challenges. NSTC has 22 core faculty members from the College of Science, the College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) and the School of Modeling, Simulation and Training. NSTC has 11 NSF Career Awardees, and an annual research expenditure of $6M.

Materials Science and Engineering is housed in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. MSE provides high quality research and education to undergraduate and graduate students. MSE has over 30 faculty and offers B.S., M.S., Ph.D. degrees in MSE.

Faculty at MSE and NSTC are responsible for teaching, research, and service. Teaching duties include delivering undergraduate and graduate courses and mentoring students. In research, faculty are expected to maintain a productive, externally funded program, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and collaborate across disciplines. Service includes participating in university and departmental committees, peer review, and outreach activities that promote STEM education. Faculty also contribute to innovation through technology transfer and industry partnerships.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • An earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or other closely related disciplines is required by the start of the appointment.

  • Applicants must also provide evidence of strong commitment to academic activities, including teaching, scholarly publications, and sponsored research.

  • To be eligible for appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor upon hire, the selected candidate must have a potential to achieve excellence in teaching, research, and service.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • An exceptional record of scholarly research in one or more of the targeted technical areas is highly desirable.

  • A history of working with teams, especially ones that span multiple disciplines, is also preferred.

  • Demonstrated research leadership ability and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience performing research tasks.

  • Solid track record of publications.

  • Proficiency in English.
