Purpose of Position

The Assistant Director of Digital Media will be responsible for creating, editing, and publishing high-quality content across multiple social media and web platforms, while contributing to strategy for The University of Texas System's digital media presence. The assistant director will craft and distribute consistent and timely posts to inform the public and curate rich content on an ongoing basis. The assistant director will work as part of the media relations team and engage cross-collaboratively with departments across the UT System to ensure alignment with the System's messages.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and publish high-quality, high-volume content for digital communications focused on informing and engaging broad audiences.
  • Create and post dynamic social content and coordinate short- and long-term amplification of initiatives, news, accomplishments, and timely information to support the outreach of the UT System and UT community.
  • Collaborate with the UT System creative team to integrate strong visual assets into digital storytelling.
  • Monitor news sources to stay informed of and develop content tailored to current events and emerging trends in higher education, research and healthcare.
  • Uphold the digital reputation of the UT System and ensure consistency in branding.
  • Leverage AI tools to streamline content creation, enhance productivity, and introduce innovative approaches to digital engagement.
  • Analyze data from social media platforms and UT System websites to evaluate performance and identify opportunities to expand reach.
  • Assist in preparing and distributing the digital UT System News report, a twice-weekly compilation of news about UT institutions and higher education.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Exceptional knowledge of the use of multi-channel digital platforms to inform, engage and optimize content.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with an eye for clarity, consistency, and tone.
  • Keen awareness of issues important to Texas, higher education, research and health, with an ability to translate issues into succinct communications messages to educate and inform.
  • Impeccable professional judgment on communications matters.
  • A record of demonstrated expertise in creating rich, high-quality content, including succinct and effective messaging tailored to multiple audiences and platforms.
  • Strong instincts to determine appropriate and timely information.
  • Ability to mine information to create a steady inventory of content.
  • Self-directed, with attention to detail and commitment to excellence in all phases of work.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize and manage complex tasks, and work independently and on a team.
  • Ability to define, collect and analyze performance using social media metrics.
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Seven years of experience in communications, including at least five years with primary responsibilities in developing and producing digital content on multiple platforms for a mature organization, and excellent skills in writing and editing original content.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing social media accounts for entities with multiple brands and public figures.
  • Experience with multimedia software and editing tools.
  • Experience with content management systems, and knowledge of site/page metadata and relationship to sharing posts.
  • Experience working with higher education or academic health institutions.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
Working Conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
  • Uses standard office equipment.
  • Requires in-person presence in office although some hybrid work options are available.
  • All content is developed internally without reliance on outside agency support for this work.
  • May require evening or weekend attention in the event of time-sensitive communications needs.
Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to a minimum of 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Participation in TRS is mandatory.

A background check will be conducted on candidates under final consideration. The background check may include any or all of the following: criminal history check, prior employment verification, education verification, professional references check, and motor vehicle records check. Background checks are conducted by third-party vendors. Upon request form the third-party vendor, candidates under final consideration must provide the required information for the background checks to be completed.
