The Opportunity

The Marketing organization influences decisions by establishing and communicating our full product value proposition across the full value chain, from payers, to health systems, to prescribers, to patients. Marketers are masterful storytellers - accountable to inform positioning using an insight-driven marketing strategy, deliver simple compelling customer-led content creation, and design outstanding integrated customer experiences in partnership with networked partners (e.g., Customer Engagement and DDA). Marketers strategically use resources and their network to drive patient outcomes for today's innovations, and fuel tomorrow's breakthroughs.

This Director, Performance Marketing Strategy and Advancement Lead, is integral to successfully delivering the Digital Marketing Vision.

The Digital Marketing Office, led by the Head of Digital Marketing and reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, drives Genentech's digital marketing transformation and is focused on activating 4 key areas. One of these focus areas is Performance Marketing.

The candidate in this role will report to the Senior Director, Performance Marketing and lead the definition and alignment of performance marketing business requirements with brand strategy and execution, ensuring that performance marketing tools and processes meet brand goals and drive efficient, high-quality business outcomes at scale. The candidate will work closely with functional partners in analytics, operations, and other areas to align on a shared vision, roadmap, and implementation plan.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with brand marketing to identify opportunities to optimize impact and improve efficiency across performance marketing initiatives.

  • Stay at the forefront of the performance marketing innovation landscape, identifying new analytical approaches and methodologies and sharing actionable insights with internal teams.

  • Identify and implement performance marketing tool enhancements in partnership with functional partners to meet evolving marketing needs.

  • Define business needs, prioritize features, and partner with Product Owners to shape roadmaps and support the development of impactful tools and capabilities.

  • Review and validate products to ensure they align with strategic objectives and are ready for activation.

  • Subsequently, develop robust launch plans, playbooks, and support plans to guide a successful launch.

  • Drive adoption of performance marketing products via training, coaching, and the engagement of activation champions, as well as broader upskilling initiatives.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure seamless integration of performance marketing strategies into end-to-end workflows across marketing functions, external agency partners, and channels.

  • Lead process and product improvements to drive adoption and scale, partnering with executive leaders (ELs) on change management and training strategies.

  • Set and track KPIs to measure performance marketing efficiencies and effectiveness, using insights to iterate and optimize.

  • Continuously explore and assess emerging performance marketing use cases to drive business impact, collaborating with 1Marketing and technical teams to evaluate feasibility and integrate new capabilities.

  • Continuously engage governance bodies to ensure responsible performance data use across 1Marketing.

  • Lead initiatives that impact the broader 1Marketing organization and contribute meaningfully to Commercial, Medical, and Government (CMG) outcomes across multiple therapeutic areas.

  • Mobilize and lead fit-for-purpose, flexibly deployed work teams across the CMG network, leveraging domain expertise and performance marketing priorities.

  • Operate autonomously, with a bias toward action, aligned with enterprise marketing objectives and performance marketing goals.

Who You Are:

Minimum Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 8 years minimum work experience, with 6 years of commercial experience (sales, marketing, market access or customer insights), two of which must be in marketing.

  • Experience with sole ownership of tactics or pieces; ability to articulate business problems, identify solutions and own content development from strategy through execution.

Preferred:

  • MBA or other related graduate-level degree preferred

  • Marketing experience in relevant industries

  • Experience in the managed care, Pharmaceutical or Biotech industry/pharmaceutical or biotech customer engagement

  • Experience in creating marketing strategies, plans and tactics that have strengthened market positioning and driven high-value customer and business outcomes

  • Experience in creating marketing strategies, plans, and tactics that have strengthened market positioning and financial results

  • Proven track record and experience in leading cross-functional teams and managing large-scale performance marketing initiatives

  • Strong understanding of digital marketing and performance marketing trends, technologies, and best practices

  • Expertise with the design or execution of performance marketing measurement and optimization processes

  • Strong experience in change management, specifically driving the adoption of new analytics tools, data-driven processes, and performance-focused mindsets within a marketing organization.

  • Ability to drive a data-driven marketing practice, focus on metrics that matter (both leading and lagging), and drive business performance forward without unnecessary complexity and overanalysis.

  • Ability to effectively influence a broad range of technical business-oriented leaders

  • Experience facilitating cross-functional engagement, relationship building and collaboration

  • Deep understanding of pharma-specific performance marketing processes across digital (email, social, web, display, OLV) and print channels.

  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements for digital marketing in the pharmaceutical industry

  • Strong organizational, communication skills with proven attention to detail

  • Ability to think with an enterprise mindset

  • Ability to flex and thrive in an ambiguous environment undergoing transformational change

  • Strong customer orientation and focus

Location:

  • This position is based in South San Francisco, CA

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of CA is $187,100 - $347,500. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
