Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary

The Greenhouse and Nursery Assistant Manager position assists with the operation of the greenhouse and nursery facilities at the North Carolina Botanical Garden (NCBG) including regular weekend shifts to ensure continuity of care of the plants grown therein. This position also plays an active role in the propagation activities of the NCBG nursery including helping to maintain records about the nursery's use of seed accessions and the efficacy of various propagation techniques. This position helps plan for, stock and maintain the NCBG daily plant sale which includes updating availability on the Garden's website.

This position also helps with the NCBG nursery's participation in Spring and Fall plant sale events. This position will also contribute to NCBG's educational outreach by helping deliver talks, tours, and classes as well as contributing content about their areas of expertise to NCBG's Communication Department for use in the newsletter, magazine and social media.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from high school and some experience in horticultural work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special Licensure or Certification: May require North Carolina Pesticide License; North Carolina Commercial Driver's License.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

-Familiarity with the flora of the southeastern U.S. and its use in a landscape setting.

-Experience working with basic greenhouse and nursery facilities (heating / cooling systems, irrigation).

-Experience in plant propagation.

-Proficiency using spreadsheets and other Microsoft Office Suite applications.

-Ability to work both Saturday and Sunday on two weekends out of every four.

-Must have a North Carolina Pesticide License or the ability to obtain one.

-Must have a valid North Carolina Drivers license or the ability to obtain one.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

-Strong writing/editing skills.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

- Ability to safely lift or move up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.

- Ability to work out-of-doors year round and endure exposure to summer sun, heat and humidity, winter cold and natural hazards (mosquitos, ticks, fire ants, venomous snakes, poison ivy) on a routine basis with or without reasonable accommodation.
