Geotechnical Engineering Intern | Peoria, IL

Join IMEG as a Geotechnical Engineering Intern in Peoria, IL, and get hands-on with the science of what's beneath our feet. Over 10-12 weeks, you'll rotate between fieldwork, lab testing, and design-sampling soils, running analyses, and helping solve real-world foundation and infrastructure challenges. You'll work side-by-side with experienced engineers, gain exposure to cutting-edge equipment and software, and see your contributions shape projects from concept to construction. Along the way, you'll build technical skills, professional connections, and confidence that will set you apart as you launch your geotechnical engineering career.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Assist with field and laboratory testing under senior staff direction

  • Document field and laboratory testing results

  • Support engineering analysis, design, and field inspections

  • Help develop routine reports

  • Document design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while tracking progress

  • Review project documents for accuracy and completeness before final checks

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil

  • Engineering, or equivalent required

  • Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred

  • Strong attention to detail

  • May be required to assist with field duties such as survey, geotechnical drilling, pavement coring and materials testing

  • Strong interest in geotechnical engineering

  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office programs and CAD software

  • Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Geotechnical Team Highlights:

  • Assist in site investigations, soil and rock exploration, and foundation recommendations

  • Contribute to landmark projects like the I-74 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River, Bettendorf Sports Complex, and major interstate improvements

  • Contribute to the design of bridges, highways, and large-scale developments from concept through construction

  • Gain experience in construction materials testing (soil, aggregate, asphalt, concrete) to ensure safety and quality

  • Help prevent geotechnical hazards such as landslides, sinkholes, and unstable slopes

  • Learn the latest geotechnical testing methods and engineering tools, including AutoCAD Civil 3D and geotechnical analysis software

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate geotechnical findings into structural and civil designs

Peoria, IL

Salary Range: $20.00-22.00/hour Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay will be based on several factors including experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant. Other rewards may include annual bonuses and stock ownership options.
