Position Highlights |
The James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, Innovation for Justice (i4J) is hiring a Community Legal Education Lead. The primary purposes of this position are: to facilitate and teach the Housing Stability Legal Advocate Program, an online, asynchronous program for community students; lead online synchronous legal skill-building training sessions for enrolled HSLA community students; identify relevant continuing education and support opportunities for HSLA students and certified HSLAs; facilitate attorney mentor relationships; maintain relationships with HSLAs and their host organizations to ensure future iteration maintains fidelity with communities' expressed desires; work as part of an interdisciplinary, cross-institutional teaching team to undertake exploration, design, and implementation of learner-centered teaching strategies for i4J's community legal education programs; lead data collection and evaluation efforts for the HSLA Program; produce community and funder reports regarding the HSLA Program; and expand the audience of i4J's research and findings. This position is funded for 1 year with an opportunity for renewal / extension. Candidates working anywhere in the U.S. may be considered for a remote assignment. Duties & Responsibilities |
Facilitate and teach the HSLA Initiative
- Combine critical legal design- and thinking- research approaches with rigorous and engaging pedagogical approaches to support student learning in a community-facing legal education classroom.
- Design community-centered and technology-enhanced flipped classroom content that i) prioritizes learner-centeredness, trauma-informed and trauma-responsive practices, learner agency, inclusivity, accessibility, and scalability as well as ii) guides students' experiential learning in a community-facing legal education classroom.
- Facilitate the online, asynchronous training components of the HSLA Program for the enrolled community students.
- Lead online, synchronous legal skill-building training sessions for enrolled HSLA community students
- Identify relevant continuing education, networking, and support opportunities for HSLA students and certified HSLAs; facilitate attorney mentor relationships
- Supervise and mentor any i4J GTAs and post-graduate fellows.
- Engage in regular professional development opportunities to stay current with applicable substantive law and the rapidly growing fields of community legal education.
Research and Evaluation of Community Legal Education
- Lead data collection and evaluation efforts for the HSLA Program;
- Produce community and funder reports regarding the HSLA Program, including evaluation findings.
- Publish i4J's community legal education work in scholarly journals to expand the reach and audience of i4J's Initiative-based findings from the field.
- Bridge the theoretical and scholarly siloes of experiential learning, clinical legal education, and community-engaged access to justice work.
- Attend relevant convenings and conferences to share i4J's community legal education work
Support the Community Legal Education Focus of the HSLA Initiative
- Contribute to communications regarding community legal education in line with the overarching i4J strategic direction.
- Provide direct programmatic support in the capacity-building of community legal education programs
- Liaise with A2J organizations and state, local, and national jurisdictions to identify successes, challenges, and opportunity spaces associated with i4J's community legal education Initiatives.
- Liaise with participating community-based organization regarding the successes, challenges, and opportunity spaces associated with i4J's community legal education initiatives
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Experience
teaching in a higher education setting, and a deep commitment to online learning, enhancing learner agencies, and learner-centered approaches in education. - Expert in
community-driven legal advocacy, cross-jurisdictional community engagement, and working with vulnerable populations. - Expert in program
management in the legal design space, with exceptional skill in overseeing workflows that are responsive to the needs, goals, and lived realities of communities. - Experience in
engaging with law reform efforts across the civil legal system. - Expert in design-
and/or systems-thinking practices. - Evidence of an
empathetic and creative mindset and comfort with complex and sensitive issues. - Comfort with
ambiguity and fast-paced, rapidly evolving environments. - Experience with
strategic planning principles and practices, and demonstrated change, growth, and innovation management abilities. - Excellent
communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to effectively communicate with individuals of varying technical and substantive subject matter expertise. - Broad knowledge
in collaborative technology tools used in human-centered design and research.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Juris Doctor
degree. - Minimum 3 years
of experience in community-centered advocacy.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience with online teaching and learning best practices.
- Experience leading successful multi-disciplinary teams and directing complex projects.
- Experience in creative problem solving.
- Experience in cross-jurisdictional community-engagement.
- Evidence of scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as a scholar.
