What to Expect
Tesla is currently seeking an experienced, motivated, and accomplished Materials Test Technician to support our battery design and development. You will be responsible for operating and maintaining our Materials Test Lab in Palo Alto. The successful candidate will conduct analytical testing, mechanical testing, materials validation, quality control, and failure analysis investigations across multiple battery and vehicle programs. You will additionally be responsible for maintaining the lab and equipment, and organizing test work flow.
What You'll Do
- Perform a wide variety of tests on a broad spectrum of materials. Test competence should be exhibited in the following:Analytical characterization: TGA, DSC, DMA, SEM-EDS, FTIR, rheometry, thermal conductivity, resistivity, among others, mechanical test: universal testing (Instron) - tensile, compression, shear, torsion, and related, environmental aging: using humidity and thermal cycling chambers and basic instrumentation, data acquisition and analysis
- Independently and accurately outline and follow DOEs, interpret results and issue test result reports
- Management of laboratory assets, ensuring all equipment is maintained, calibrated and serviced
- Comfortable and experienced working safely in lab settings
- Develop, author and ensure conformance to laboratory standard operating procedures
- Support engineering staff in root cause analysis and failure analysis workstreams
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor degree in technical field, with 1+ years materials test experience, or proven track record of materials test experience
- Basic knowledge of materials automotive test standards (e.g. ASTM, ISO)
- Basic knowledge related to the following fields, including manufacturing methods and failure modes: polymers, composites, coatings, adhesives
- Experience working with hazardous materials, with a willingness to exhibit and promote health and safety across the team
- Exceptional organization, collaboration and communication skills (e.g. report writing)
- Detailed-oriented, able to work both independently and in a collaborative project-focused environment, prompt and dependable
- Effectively handle multiple priorities, meet deadlines and manage time independently

Expected Compensation
$28.80 - $56.40/hour + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
