Teaching Assistant Professor of Musicology

The Department of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking candidates for a Teaching Assistant Professor position in Musicology with expertise in musical theater and popular music. We wish to hire a pedagogically innovative colleague to serve a wide range of students pursuing a broad liberal arts education (https://ideasinaction.unc.edu/) across the university as well as music majors and minors studying western art music, jazz, musical theater, and popular music. The selected candidate will teach courses on the history and culture of musical theater, rock music, and popular music, along with other courses that align with the candidate's research interests and our departmental mission as outlined on our website (https://music.unc.edu/about/).

The Department of Music at UNC-Chapel Hill offers a BMus and BA in Music, minors both in music and musical theater, and an MA and Ph.D. in Musicology. Our educational mission is to teach music majors, provide general music courses for non-major students, and guide graduate students as researchers and teachers. We serve the public by presenting performances and academic lectures by students, faculty, and guest artists and scholars, including over one hundred concerts and recitals each year and a staged musical theater production. We have a state-of-the-art auditorium which includes recording (audio and video) capabilities as well as lighting and sound systems. Our 60 full-time and part-time faculty teach approximately 2500 students during the academic year and another 200 during summer school. Through our teaching, research, and creative activities we share music's multiplicity of forms and meanings, connecting the study of music to the larger understanding of societies, and affirming music's importance as an expression of humanity.

This is a full-time, teaching-track (non-tenure-track) position with an initial 3-yearappointment and the possibility of renewal and promotion. Teaching load will be three (3 credit-hour) courses per semester or the equivalent. Responsibilities begin on July 1, 2026.

The successful candidate will have a graduate degree in a relevant field.

Preference will be given for candidates holding a Ph.D. or equivalent in Musicology or related field, and who have at least two years of classroom teaching experience at the university level. The committee may solicit additional materials including letters of recommendation, one writing sample (a complete chapter or article, which may be in draft form), a sample syllabus, and a teaching statement that addresses strategies candidates might use in a public university setting where students reflect the socioeconomic, racial, religious, and other diverse characteristics across the state.
