Your summer will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking opportunities, community involvement, and most importantly, have fun! Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the departments below for summer 2026: Available Roles Gas Network Operations - Gas Control (Melville, NY) Our Gas Network Operations - Gas Control team provides technical compliance support and training expertise to ensure the safe, secure, and reliable operation of National Grid's transmission and distribution systems. This team is also responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing gas simulation models to support the planning, operation, and optimization of National Grid's gas network infrastructure. As a Gridtern, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the accuracy and reliability of simulation results, which are an essential part of the development and training of Gas System Operators in New York and Massachusetts. You will also work independently to collate and analyze large datasets using a variety of simulation tools, methods, and formats to support the department's decision-making process. In this role, you will utilize MS SQL, Reporting Services (MS SSRS), and C# programming, applying your knowledge of stored procedures to support your work. . Gas Pipeline Safety & Compliance Continuous Improvement (Melville, NY) Our Gas Pipeline Safety & Compliance Continuous Improvement (PS&C CI) team plays a key role in advancing safety, reliability, and innovation across our U.S. Gas business. This team focuses on identifying and implementing improvements that strengthen pipeline safety and regulatory compliance. They lead assessments in high-risk areas, turn lessons from incidents and near misses into lasting practices, and help roll out initiatives aligned with API 1173 and PSMS standards. In addition, they manage compliance recommendations from start to finish, ensuring results while supporting our company's clean energy goals through data-driven insights and collaboration. As a Gridtern, you will contribute to projects that improve pipeline safety and compliance while building valuable analytical and professional skills. You'll help integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and other tools into workflows that enhance project management, risk assessment, and data visualization. You'll also assist in refining our Power BI dashboards to increase transparency and engagement and support the development of AI-powered processes that forecast delays, flag risks, and recommend schedule improvements. This opportunity will provide hands-on experience in process improvement and data analytics while allowing you to make a meaningful impact. . Software Engineering - IT & Digital (Hicksville, NY) Our Software Engineering team is responsible for creating innovative software solutions that support National Grid's field crews and our control room operations. From planning and work execution to network operations, this team takes pride in delivering technology that makes a real difference. As a Gridtern, you'll get hands-on experience with modern tools like backend APIs, React front-end interfaces, and real-time data streams. This role will allow you to see how ideas are turned into features, from brainstorming and design all the way through development and deployment, while working side by side with various engineers. In addition, you'll utilize your technical skills to contribute to meaningful projects and learn what it's like to build software that powers our greater essential operations. . Technology and Innovation (Melville, NY) Our Technology & Innovation team at National Grid is focused on driving change through process improvements, automation, and artificial intelligence. By exploring innovative solutions, this team streamlines operations, boosts productivity, and achieves measurable time and cost savings. Their efforts enhance efficiency across the business and help maintain our leadership in a competitive industry. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to make a direct impact by developing automation tools like Python scripts, Power Automate, and various applications to support our gas business. You will also gain hands-on experience with AI initiatives, including computer vision and other emerging technologies, helping to create innovative processes that deliver real value to the organization. What You'll Need Availability to start on the program start date, June 15, 2026, and work full-time (40 hours a week) for the duration of the summer Must be registered as a full-time student and continue your education full-time through the Fall 2026 semester Pursuing a Bachelor's, or Master's degree Majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics or related majors. Have accumulated 18 or more credits and be at least 18 years of age Possess work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT) Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver's license with a safe driving history that complies with National Grid's Safe Driver policy. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements. Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
