Position Summary

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Spanish in Modern Peninsular Literary and Cultural Studies, to begin in August 2026. Applicants must have a PhD in Spanish or Comparative Literature or a related field by the time of appointment in August 2026. We seek a dynamic scholar whose research centers on the literature and culture of modern Spain (19th century to the present). We are especially interested in candidates whose work engages with performance studies, especially flamenco; poetry and poetics; Lusophone cultures; visual culture and film; or critical approaches to gender, race, and migration. Scholars with creative practice in addition to scholarly research-such as creative writing, translation, or public humanities work-are also encouraged to apply.

The new faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Modern Peninsular Literary and Cultural Studies and supervise masters and doctoral students. They will be expected to contribute to UNM's vibrant community of students and scholars and to participate actively in departmental and university service.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

* Ph.D. in Spanish, Comparative Literature, or a related field by time of appointment (August 10, 2026).

* Specialization in Modern Peninsular Literary and Cultural Studies (19th century to the present).

* Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Demonstrated potential for an active research agenda with international impact in Modern Peninsular Literary and Cultural Studies (19th century to the present).

* Evidence of or demonstrated potential for teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

* Interest in contributing to undergraduate and graduate mentoring.

* Potential for engagement with public humanities, creative writing, or interdisciplinary programs at UNM (e.g., Art History, Film, Flamenco, Lusophone Cultures, Latin American Studies, Musicology).

* Demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
