Job Description

The Controls Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving automated electrical control systems that support manufacturing operations. This role focuses on ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient machine performance through PLC/HMI programming, VFD configuration, instrumentation calibration, and advanced diagnostics. The Controls Technician works closely with electricians, mechanics, engineers, and production personnel to minimize downtime and support continuous improvement.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, and repair PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, encoders, sensors, and industrial control networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.).
  • Install, configure and program PLCs, Drives, and HMIs (Allen Bradley, Siemens, Yaskawa, and similar platforms).
  • Diagnose control system faults using schematics, PLC logic, and test instruments such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and IR thermography.
  • Support predictive and preventive maintenance programs through control system checks, tuning, firmware updates, and control cabinet inspections.
  • Collaborate with engineers and maintenance personnel to implement system upgrades, modifications, and new equipment installations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date control documentation, electrical schematics, and network layouts.
  • Lead root cause analysis for control-related downtime events and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in training electricians and apprentices in advanced controls troubleshooting techniques.
  • Support TPM, RCM, and autonomous maintenance initiatives by identifying control-related training and improvement opportunities.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by recommending and implementing automation solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, and internal safety procedures for electrical work.
  • Participate in capital project installations, commissioning, and control system integration.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards including proper PPE use, boundary establishment, equipment de-energization and verification, and adherence to all applicable NFPA 70E and facility safety requirements.
  • Follow all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures in accordance with OSHA 1910.147 and facility requirements when servicing or maintaining equipment. Ensure all energy sources are properly identified, isolated, locked, and verified prior to starting work, and remove locks and tags only after confirming the area is safe for operation.
  • Create and manage work orders and record daily time in the JDE CMMS to ensure accurate maintenance tracking and documentation.
  • Perform daily housekeeping to maintain clean, organized, and safe work environments.
  • Train and support production and maintenance staff on control system operation.

Hours - Monday thru Friday 7A to 3P, willingness to work overtime as needed.

This is an hourly position with an opportunity for monthly incentive payments after a 90-day probationary period is complete.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Associate degree in Industrial Controls, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in industrial electrical maintenance with emphasis on controls and automation.
  • Strong proficiency in PLC programming and troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix preferred).
  • Experience with VFD programming (AB and Yaskawa), HMIs (PanelView Plus), and motion control.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder logic, P&IDs, and mechanical drawings.
  • Familiarity with Ethernet/IP networking, industrial safety circuits, and instrumentation calibration.
  • Competency with diagnostic tools such as multimeters, meggers, oscilloscopes, and network analyzers.
  • Familiarity with TPM, RCM, and predictive maintenance practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Standing/walking on concrete floors for 12-hour shifts. Pushing/pulling, lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable working in industrial environments with exposure to heat and noise.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and enter confined spaces as required.
  • Willingness to work shifts, overtime, or on-call as needed.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of robotics and automation integration
  • Proficient in AutoDesk and Inventor software.
  • Proficient in RSLogix 5000, CCW, Studio 5000, Drive Executive, RSLinx Classic, Yaskawa Drive Wirzard, ZelioSoft2.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Software and email software.

  • Successful candidates are welcome to use their own hand tools in this role, subject to approval from supervisor
