Department (OC) WADS - Wadsworth CenterJob Description: Responsibilities The Research Scientist I (RSI) will be responsible for activities related to the response to outbreaks of fungal pathogens in healthcare facilities in New York and other states in the northeast region. The RSI will perform culture and molecular-based technologies for the screening of drug-resistant fungal pathogens. These will include culturing of fungal pathogens on different media, antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST), identification by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and detection by real-time and conventional PCR technologies in low and high throughput platforms, data interpretations, and data submission to the state epidemiologists and the CDC through the Wadsworth Center's Clinical Laboratory Information Management System (CLIMS). The RSI will perform all quality assurance and quality controls pertaining to tests performed and contribute to editing/writing of Standard Operating Procedures. In addition, the RSI will contribute to data interpretation, writing abstracts, and manuscripts and will participate and present in local and national meetings. This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center's mission in the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and two years of research experience; OR a master's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and one year of research experience. Degrees must be from an accredited institution. This position will require the incumbent will meet all Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements. These requirements can be found here: https://hri.box.com/s/v6shwh9z0w05glegrv3fofxzxt4co8nz Preferred Qualifications Three years of experience in medical technology, molecular biology, or microbiology, as well as performing PCR, real-time PCR and DNA sequencing on clinical specimens. Strong written and verbal communication skills that demonstrate the ability to analyze data, prepare data summaries, perform literature review, and write scientific papers. Conditions of Employment Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required. The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire.
