Job Summary


Under the direction of the Manager of Behavioral Health Services, the Lead applies experienced knowledge of frontline staff practices, which include practice coordinators and patient navigators, to develop processes and improve access efficiency and productivity. Represents team members and partners with leadership in the enhancement of operational workflows. Independently uses and applies knowledge and experience to develop and manage high profile strategic initiatives across general psychiatry, interventional psychiatry, and specialty services. Leads teams and projects using advanced professional concepts and objectives to address and resolve intermediate to complex issues. Works on programs requiring political sensitivity, where analysis of circumstances and information requires an in-depth evaluation of factors. Manage and coordinate special projects/assignments as they arise within the Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinics. Assist in process improvement, which includes the planning, development, implementation, training, and sustainment of a daily engagement system. Keep track of dashboards and metrics.

Involves providing non-clinical support, guidance and assistance for patients and families as they navigate through complex healthcare environments. Primary goals are to increase patient satisfaction, and to optimize care and outcomes. Acts as a communication liaison to understand the patient's non-clinical individual needs, desires, and concerns. Guides the patient and family to a broad range of services, amenities, and information to promote healing and ensure satisfaction with the patient care experience.

Department Description

UCSF's behavioral health clinics provide a broad range of outpatient psychiatric consultation, evaluation, and treatment interventions for emotional, psychological, or cognitive problems. Clinical programs are located in the UCSF Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood. Situated adjacent to UCSF's Mission Bay campus, the building is one of the few in the nation that combines outpatient mental health care for people of all ages with top-ranking programs in psychiatry and psychology training and research. By integrating behavioral health clinical, training, and research facilities under one roof-along with services from neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, anesthesiology, obstetrics/gynecology, and other specialties at UCSF-our center allows patients to receive world-class clinical care and participate in cutting-edge clinical research at a single location.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • At least 1-2 years of project management and/or or leading a team
  • Expert knowledge of the clinical and operational implications of ambulatory care clinic practice management including patient care workflows and processes. Advanced understanding of medical terminology and maintains a broad range of clinical expertise in theory and best practices of clinic practice area.
  • Proven ability to apply knowledge of medical center policies and procedures and related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments to assess and monitor clinic operations to recommend improvements in complex clinic processes.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in the Microsoft Suite. Skills in data management. Advanced knowledge of organization's relevant healthcare and clinic operations information technology, including billing systems and medical record documentation. Ability to teach others.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills. Skills to work collaboratively; coordinate and integrate with others throughout the organization. Successful experience working with people with a wide range of backgrounds and skills.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Proven ability in analytical / problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, and delegate work functions efficiently.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to convey complex information, instructions, and guidelines in a clear, concise, and specific manner, and to influence and persuade all levels of staff.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service.
  • Thorough knowledge of high reliability organization methods, financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees.
  • Lean Certification
  • Project Management Professional Certification (PMP)
