What to Expect
The Tesla Megafactory team in Brookshire is looking for an experienced Technical Writer who will work alongside engineers and other technical writers to document the fine details of manufacturing processes and equipment operation. They will be the responsible owner of the Technical Writing work at the site to ensure that it is completed on time and to the highest standards of excellence. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in industrial or manufacturing environments with expertise in technical writing. The candidate will be able to quickly capture information with notes, recordings, and photographs. One captured, the candidate will be able to transform this information into clear Manufacturing Instructions (MIs), visual aids, training checklists, and maintenance instructions. Photography experience will be a plus. They will also have a strong desire to help build and maintain a world class training program in a dynamic industry-defining organization. They will also be responsible for ensuring that the Document Management Standards and Change Management Standards are understood and adhered to by the Technical Writing Team to ensure ISO9001:2015 compliance. This Technical Writer will have a passion for teaching others and achieving excellence through instruction, writing, and problem-solving actions. They possess natural leadership skills, are innovative, and are critical thinkers. They will work within a highly functioning team and must be self-motivated. They have the desire and ability to navigate through multiple competing priorities in a dynamic and fast-paced environment that changes day to day. This role will be based out of the Greater Houston Area (TX) however could require 90% travel to work in the Bay Area (CA) to support early builds and validation support for the first 6 to 12 months. Travel plans and reimbursement will follow Tesla's Travel Policy and will be governed by the direct manager.  
 
What You'll Do
  - Specific technical writing duties include composing instructional documents on factory topics, moving step-by-step through factory topics with engineers to take notes and photographs for new documentation along the way
 - Consistent style and formatting defined by detailed templates
 - Promptly and clearly escalates issues and questions verbally and / or via email during documentation drafting
 - The ideal candidate takes pride in their hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Works lineside to capture details on the spot

 - This role will potentially lead and manage a small team of Technical Writers. Specific managerial duties include, but are not limited to, interviewing / hiring future technical writers, technical training and professional development of team members, coordinating and prioritizing work for the team, and tracking / reporting on key operational metrics
 - Maintain document history and manage version control of documents. Simultaneously manage multiple overlapping projects at different stages and on separate development programs and contribute to overall process improvement
 
   
 
What You'll Bring
  - Experience creating process documentation that clearly and efficiently communicates concepts, ideas, and instructions
 - Ability to translate verbal information into clearly written procedures
 - Demonstrated excellence in digital photography including but not limited to the following: still and motion photography, with attention to aspect ratio and subject framing. Ability to use macro features to capture close-up detail. Manipulation of files between camera and computer. Formatting and editing of digital images, including image size and resolution, color, brightness and contrast, rotation and cropping
 - Experience creating technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment is a plus. Experience reading and interpreting mechanical drawings is a plus. Ability to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines (simultaneously managing multiple documentation projects)
 - Exemplary verbal and written communication skills, with a proficiency in English grammar, spelling and punctuation
 - Excellent listening and observation skills
 - Well organized with meticulous attention to detail. Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint
