Senior Staff Associate I

The Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Staff Associate I in the Doulatov Lab. As part of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center and Edward P. Evans MDS Center, the Doulatov Lab studies the fundamental mechanisms by which blood cancers arise and develop from healthy blood-forming stem cells by employing induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and other advanced models. The Senior Staff Associate will be responsible for lab administration, management and organization, as well as working closely and collaboratively with PI, trainees, and staff to contribute to ongoing research projects.

This individual will be responsible for lab management and organization to ensure that the lab and research projects are running smoothly. This includes administrative tasks, including ordering supplies and managing budgets, maintaining inventory of supplies and samples and lab equipment. Tasks include preparing common reagents, receiving and processing primary samples, iPSC reprogramming, managing the mouse colony, and training students and staff. The individual will also be working with the PI and staff to contribute to research projects and publications. The ideal candidate will have strong laboratory research experience related to hematopoiesis, cancer, and/or stem cells, prior publications, and demonstrate excellent technical, communication, and organizational skills.

Duties and responsibilities

• Lab management and organization (30%): Performs lab management and organization tasks including: prepare common reagents, maintain stocks of common cell lines and plasmids, process blood samples, reprogram and maintain a repository of iPSC lines, manage the mouse colony.
• Administrative (20%): Performs tasks related to lab administration, including: place orders, track budget, maintain inventories of supplies and samples, assist with protocols and compliance, and other tasks to ensure the lab is running smoothly.
• Research (40%): Supports and contributes to ongoing research projects in the lab. Works independently or collaboratively with other lab members under supervision of PI. Specific goals and tasks will be defined on a project-by-project basis.
• Technical expertise (5%): Masters existing experimental protocols; develops and optimizes new experimental protocols using methodologies such as:
  
  
  
  • Human hematopoietic stem cell isolation, genetic modification, cell culture, molecular and functional analysis by flow cytometry and microscopy.
  • Human iPSC reprogramming, iPSC culture, hematopoietic differentiation.
  • Cloning and molecular biology, transfection, and generation of viral vectors.
  • Mouse colony maintenance and bone marrow transplantation.
  
  
  
  
• Reporting (5%): Presents data in lab meetings, contributes to funding proposals, progress reports, and/or manuscripts.

• Bachelor's degree in biology and 6-10 years experience in a research laboratory, or Master's degree and equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Evidence of prior publications and contributions.
• Strong technical skills in cell culture, especially stem or primary cell culture; flow cytometry; and animal experiments.
• Technical excellence and ability to follow as well as optimize protocols.
• Superb oral and writing communication skills; computational skills a plus.
• Desire and ambition to drive scientific breakthroughs and publications!
