Overview

The Chief of Staff is a strategic partner and trusted advisor who amplifies the CEO's effectiveness by managing priorities, coordinating with senior leaders, and driving key initiatives from inception to completion. Working closely with the CEO and the Executive Leadership Team, the Chief of Staff ensures the organization operates with strategic focus, alignment, and discipline, advancing enterprise priorities and enabling high-impact decision-making. Key responsibilities include serving as a liaison between departments, overseeing projects, streamlining operations, and monitoring progress to provide actionable insights. The Chief of Staff will prepare materials for meetings and ensures these sessions are focused and productive, supporting the achievement of organizational goals with efficiency and clarity. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

This position will be located in our future Short Hills, N.J. location. Until the new Short Hills headquarters is operational, the successful candidate will be required to work in our Branchville, N.J. location during the interim.


Responsibilities

  • Partner with the CEO to define, prioritize, and execute strategic business initiatives that align with the Company's long-term goals. Works with the CEO and senior leaders to develop success metrics, establish tracking mechanisms, and report progress. Responsible for driving key business initiatives and maximizing organizational impact.
  • Filter and prioritize information and requests to ensure the CEO's time is focused on high-impact activities. Acts as a gatekeeper, deciding which requests or issues warrant escalation or immediate action. Keeps a pulse on the business and captures and tracks key takeaways for the CEO.
  • Act as a trusted sounding board and representative for the CEO with senior leaders, advancing the CEO's agenda and leading significant projects. Ensures ELT commitments are met by coordinating follow-ups for post-ELT meeting actions, including capturing and tracking next steps, ensuring timely completion, and advancing decisions.
  • Attend meetings alongside the CEO or represent them when needed, ensuring that agendas focus on strategy and high-impact discussions that advance Selective's priorities. Oversee and structure quarterly processes, collaborating with stakeholders to drive successful outcomes. Prepare comprehensive meeting materials and ensure sessions are productive and outcome driven. Act as a proactive resource for ELT members and their teams, enabling them to be fully prepared and maximize the value of every meeting.
  • Serve as a communication bridge between the CEO and the organization, drafting internal communications, reports, and presentations to facilitate effective communication. Ensures alignment across systems and frameworks that support strategic planning and operational efficiency. Ensures strategic discussions on organizational priorities include aligned action plans that are cascaded throughout the organization.
  • Build trust with senior leaders and act as a thought leader on strategic issues that affect the enterprise. Proactively identify and surface issues for ELT discussion and CEO attention.
  • Oversee and manage large, cross-functional projects, driving decision-making and accountability among diverse stakeholders. Removes obstacles and drives a consistent approach across organizational priorities.
  • Conduct research and synthesize data to provide insights for executive-level decision-making.
  • Manage the CEO's office and assist with staffing and people-related strategies. Monitor items on the CEO's to-do list and ensure that important items are addressed.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements

  • Strong business acumen with the ability to think strategically while managing details.
  • Proven ability to lead complex initiatives and influence without direct authority.
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Highly organized, able to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creative thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with utmost discretion.
  • Experience in planning, financial management, and strategic planning.
  • Skilled in project coordination, reporting, and interdepartmental communications.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, or a related field.
    MBA or other advanced degree.
  • 7-10+ years in business management, consulting, or an operational role, with a proven track record of supporting senior executives and managing large, complex projects.
  • Experience in organizing and directing multiple teams, planning and leading strategic initiatives, and consulting with a focus on operations management.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
