Essential Job Duties
The Central Plant Maintenance Supervisor plays a vital leadership role within our university's utilities infrastructure, overseeing a skilled team of mechanical and electrical technicians who support the operation of five Central Utility Plants across three campuses. These plants provide essential heating, cooling, and energy services, and this position ensures that all systems, such as boilers, chillers, turbines, pumps, and water treatment equipment, operate safely, reliably, and efficiently.

Key responsibilities and duties (including but not limited to):

  • Lead and support the Central Utilities Plant Maintenance (CUPM) team through hiring, training, coaching, and performance management.
  • Foster a collaborative, safety-focused, and team-oriented environment.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate all maintenance, corrective repairs, and outage work with the Central Utilities Plant Operations group.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are documented accurately in the AiM work management system.
  • Support continuous, reliable operations for facilities that run 24/7/365.
  • Develop maintenance plans, staffing and training needs, and budget recommendations.
  • Prioritize tasks effectively and adjust plans as needed to meet deadlines and operational goals.
  • Oversee troubleshooting and repair of complex plant systems, including combustion turbine generators, heat recovery steam generators, boilers, chillers, steam turbine chillers, cooling towers, auxiliary equipment, fuel handling systems, and pumps, fans, valves, piping, and water treatment systems.
  • Ensure equipment performance meets safety, efficiency, and reliability standards.
  • Coordinate with plant operations staff, engineers, contractors, and other campus stakeholders to support seamless operations.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally across teams and departments.
  • Partner with construction teams on new installations, upgrades, and plant improvement projects.
  • Support implementation of system enhancements and modernization initiatives.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position must be available to work off hours on occasion due to planned and unplanned maintenance needs.
  • Must be able to operate a vehicle (truck) to drive to various work sites for supervision of shop personnel.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment of safety glasses, safety shoes and ear plugs,
  • Must be able to use and communicate effectively via handheld radio, cell phone, email and iPad.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in the trade(s) areas assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Must have comprehensive experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of large-scale utility generation systems (steam/condensation, chilled water, co-generation) and hands-on knowledge of industrial piping repair, including pumps and auxiliary equipment.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of water treatment programs and applications for both steam and chilled water systems, and must be familiar with all state and federal guidelines and regulations for pressure vessel repairs and maintenance.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of confined space and lock-out/tag-out procedures and requirements, including the operation of air monitors.
  • Must be able to effectively operate a Windows-based computing system and use the following programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Reader, Project, and a web browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Explorer, or Mozilla FireFox).
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with supervisors and the general public, and must be able to understand instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a supervisor in a large utility plant setting consisting of boilers, chillers, co-generation and auxiliary equipment.
  • Operational experience with maintenance and repair equipment/procedures (welding, fabrication, millwright, refractory, equipment cleaning).

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date and must be maintained.
  • Employer will provide necessary training and opportunities to obtain required licenses (with exception of driver's license) and certifications.
