What to Expect
At Tesla, we're accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy by deploying cutting edge Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) that power utilities, commercial, and industrial applications including innovative microgrids. As our Industrial Storage fleet experiences explosive growth, we're seeking a passionate and skilled BESS Commissioning Engineer to lead the charge in commissioning these systems with unmatched efficiency. If you thrive on applying first principles thinking, breaking down complex problems to their fundamental truths and rebuilding innovative solutions to bring renewable energy projects to life, this is your opportunity to make a tangible impact on a global scale. In this role, you'll collaborate with a dynamic team of engineers, field service technicians, and external partners to commission BESS, SCADA, and Balance of Plant systems. You'll diagnose and resolve challenges across inverters, battery modules, thermal systems, digital controls, and communication networks, both onsite and remotely. We're looking for someone who excels in troubleshooting electrical, electronic, mechanical, and digital systems, while fostering cross-functional collaboration to drive continuous improvement. Join us in pioneering faster deployment times and shaping the future of energy storage.
What You'll Do
- Lead Commissioning Execution: Oversee and execute commissioning activities for projects of varying scales, both onsite and remotely, ensuring seamless integration of BESS in utility, commercial, industrial, and microgrid environments
- Troubleshoot and Innovate: Apply first principles thinking to diagnose and resolve hardware, software, firmware, and network issues during commissioning, minimizing downtime and optimizing system performance
- Drive Cross Functional Solutions: Collaborate with Field Quality, Manufacturing, Design, and Field Service teams to contain issues, prevent recurrences, and implement systemic improvements
- Enhance Tools and Analytics: Contribute to the development of real-time commissioning tools and data analytics platforms for site level and fleet wide insights, enabling proactive serviceability
- Develop Documentation: Work with subject matter experts to create, evolve, and consolidate commissioning documentation into comprehensive end-to-end guides
- Customer Communication: Clearly explain root causes and resolutions to commercial and utility customers, building trust and fostering strong partnerships
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Technical Expertise: Strong engineering fundamentals with proven experience troubleshooting electrical/electronic and mechanical systems, software/firmware, SCADA/networks, and process failure modes. Proficiency in digital network protocols (e.g., CAN, TCP/IP, DNP3, REST, Modbus) and equipment running Linux-based applications
- Leadership and Collaboration: Demonstrated cross-functional leadership with excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to direct teams and coordinate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Project Engineering and Management) and external partners
- Attention to Detail: Exceptional precision in producing clear, concise documents, diagrams, and reports
- Travel and Adaptability: Willingness to travel regionally to support on-site commissioning; comfort working in field environments with technicians and construction teams
- Mindset: A passion for first principles thinking, deconstructing challenges to their core elements and innovating from the ground up to solve real-world problems in renewable energy
