About the Department

The Institute for Health Informatics has multiple tenure track position openings available at all faculty ranks. Positions will be joint appointments between the IHI and a University School/Department that will serve as the tenure home for the successful candidate. An appropriate tenure home department will be one with a good match with the candidates background and interests and a focus on informatics research within its discipline.

The Institute for Health Informatics is an independent entity within the Academic Health Center (AHC), a interdisciplinary collaboration of the six health-related schools: Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Veterinary Medicine. The Institute aims to lead the inter-professional discovery, application, and teaching of health information science to improve the health of individuals and communities by creating a vibrant collaborative environment with a strong sense of community whose members are intellectually curious and are not afraid to take risks as they strive toward the future in health informatics research. The IHI works closely with the AHC and the CTSI Biomedical Health Informatics, which is directly responsible to the Vice President for Health Affairs of the Academic Health Center (AHC). The AHC recognizes the critical role of biomedical health informatics in the care of patients, the conduct of research, including the CTSA/CTSI, and the education of its students. The AHC is engaged in collaboration with the University's Office of the Vice President for Research in undertaking a multi-year effort to grow the informatics capabilities of the entire University. Within the AHC, the IHI has academic responsibility for leading these efforts.

The IHI draws collaborators from across the highly talented faculty of the University of Minnesota ranging from specialists in health care financing in the Carlson School of Management to computer scientists and engineers from the College of Science & Engineering. It supports a vibrant and growing graduate program with over 40 students, including 24 PhD students, and a growing research portfolio. The IHI is explicitly interdisciplinary in nature and involves academics and health professionals from all health disciplines.
