Days/Hours - Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm

Description of Position
This position has the responsibility of assisting the pharmacists in the preparation and dispensing of medication to patients and Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) staff. This position also has responsibility for assisting in Purchasing/Inventory Management for the department.

Essential Functions
Prepare prescription medications for inpatient and outpatient clients in a timely and accurate manner. Provide customer service by answering phone calls and assisting clients at the pharmacy outpatient window. Purchasing/ordering medications and supplies for the pharmacy, other departments and wholesale clients as needed. Assist with prescription orders, department orders, questions and other pharmacy related items. Maintain inventory of supplies and drugs in pharmacy and med-stations. Maintain complete and accurate files for all purchasing functions.

Responsibilities
Fill medication/supply orders for clients. Compound a variety of medications; including, but not limited to: sterile intravenous admixtures, chemotherapies, capsules, suspensions, injectables and ophthalmics. Use aseptic technique and comply with USP 797 practices when preparing sterile compounds. Communicate with and assist pharmacy/VMC staff. Enter credits for items returned to the pharmacy. Assist in training pharmacy/VMC staff. Answer telephone calls, check voice mail messages, and check pharmacy email periodically. Order and maintain inventory for pharmacy and wholesale accounts. Create/Maintain files for all purchasing/inventory. Create yearly purchase orders, reconcile purchasing records and assist with pharmacy inventories. Clean and maintain pharmacy equipment. Maintain a clean, safe and orderly work environment. Knowledgeable of state and federal pharmacy regulations/rules, including controlled substances. Complete inventory/billing documents and forward to appropriate personnel. Successfully complete: yearly USP 797 Aseptic technique training, mandatory University training and other training required by Supervisor. Maintain current MN registration as a pharmacy technician. Staff dispensary during day pharmacy hours when pharmacist is not present and pharmacy cannot open. Assist pharmacist/s with various projects. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Minimum Qualifications
Three months experience as a Pharmacy Technician, registered with the MN Board of Pharmacy (preferred), in a pharmacy setting. No prior convictions of any crimes associated with the unauthorized use of controlled substances. Maintain Pharmacy Technician registration with the MN Board of Pharmacy yearly (preferred). Strong customer relations and communication skills. Knowledge of general pharmacy operations. Ability to read, write and speak fluent English in order to; fill accurate pharmacy orders and communicate with various personnel. Purchasing experience, Inventory management experience and automated dispensing cabinet (med-stations) experience all highly preferred. Certification as a pharmacy technician with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board strongly recommended.

The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has served the community for more than a century. It is the most advanced, full-service referral care center for large and small animals in Minnesota. The
VMC sees more than 35,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 of the veterinarians on staff have undergone several years of
additional training to become board-certified specialists in a particular area of veterinary medicine.

The Veterinary Medical Center is comprised of the Small Animal Hospital for dogs, cats, and other companion animals, the Piper Clinic at the new Leatherdale Equine Center, for horses, and
the Large Animal Hospital, which treats farm animals, and occasionally, zoo animals.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $22.79 to $24.04; depending on education/qualifications/experience
