Introduction to the job

ASML US brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient microchips. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced machines, which enable our customers - the world's leading chipmakers - to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics. Our headquarters are in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, and we have 18 office locations around the United States including main offices in Wilton, CT, Chandler, AZ, San Jose, CA and San Diego, CA.

Job Mission

Join our San Diego research team to lead integration of complex EUV test benches and prototype machines. You'll own technically challenging solutions, drive subsystem integration into complete benches or ASML systems, and ensure qualification and alignment on requirements. This role involves collaborating across teams, suppliers, and projects, reviewing and translating test plans into executable campaigns, and introducing innovative approaches to accelerate learning.

The ideal candidate thrives in a multidisciplinary environment, combining strategic system thinking with hands-on execution. You'll design, develop, and test submodules, partner with scientists to plan and analyze test campaigns, and document design choices to maintain clarity and traceability. Expect to balance quality with speed, foster a strong safety culture, and contribute to innovation in a fast-fail research setting.

Role and responsibilities

  • Operates complex test benches, works on EUV prototype machines.

  • Leads integration and supports the development of more complex parts of modules and/or drives and owns a technically complex solution.

  • Takes the technical lead in the integration of multiple subsystems into one complete test bench or ASML system (qualification, integration, and/or execution) and secures proper integration in line with customer specifications.

  • Works across multiple teams and collaborates with other teams.

  • Can take lead in interfaces with suppliers, customers, other projects, and other engineering disciplines in a less-defined environment (e.g., new supplier, NPI product).

  • Aligns on test coverage and solutions with counterparts from multiple adjacent groups as needed. Collaborates with engineers in other teams.

  • Understands how designs fit in at the subsystem level. Performs critical design engineering tasks, in cooperation with other disciplines and suppliers, maintains complete bench ownership, designs, develops, tests, and assists in project planning and management as well as competency development.

  • Introduces and drives new approaches on a technical level within the submodule. Provides work breakdown support to technical leads/architects/ project leaders for features/work packages and performance breakdown in own (sub-)module scope.

  • Balances between quality and timely delivery.

  • Self-propelling within own area of expertise, subject to high-level managerial direction.

  • Contributes to the PERT for upgrade/integration activities of new modules

  • Be a critical TPS (test plan specification) reviewer and owner for content criticality toward research objectives and readiness for execution on proto machines

  • Identify alternate approaches to further the innovation and learning goals, explore out of box approaches to resolve complex issues, and become a partner to the function team members in their quest for solutions

  • Hold projects accountable on translation of test and learning objectives into TPS's, from a qualification perspective and a data collection perspective

  • Spend time with scientist to translate TPS's into sequence of execution during test campaigns

  • Support data collection, analysis and clear test conclusions

  • Follow a thorough but flexible process best suited for an organizational ethos that allows idea generation, concept development and demonstration in a fast fail manner

  • Personally conduct and work to prepare all activities in a way that ensure a strong safety culture

Research

  • Achieve specific goals for a designated part of a research program. Involves working within established research systems.

Design Requirements and Specifications

  • Plan and coordinate the identification, elicitation of product and/or project requirements, conduct analysis of those requirements for completion and alignment, document and manage requirements throughout the life of the project, and coordinate the verification of the end deliverable. Generally done at the project level.

Feasibility

  • Conduct feasibility studies from a technological and organizational perspective and document findings to complete cost-benefit analysis on implementing changes to business processes, products, or business unit structure. Identify feasibility questions and improvements in own domain.

Conceptualization

  • Contribute to the design of engineering solutions; design the feasibility testing approach and supervise its implementation to support the development and validation of engineering solutions.

Preliminary Design

  • Develop technical concepts including material choices. Make technical choices in all phases, solve technical issues, devise new approaches to problems encountered. Prepare high-level design of the (sub-) module fulfilling the requirements set while addressing architectural and interface choices. Document the high-level design in the relevant SEG documents.

Detailed Design

  • Contribute to the design of engineering solutions; design the feasibility testing approach and supervise its implementation to support the development and validation of engineering solutions.

  • Detail out the design including its documentation.

Integration

  • Integrate sub-systems into the system, execute configuration management, and provide support to projects.

Product Quality/Testing

  • Contribute to the specification of Qualification-, Integration-, and Production- Tests, design and produce associated test tools, realize the qualification of the design by ensuring the proto production, execute tests and report results.

  • Develop product specifications and design test procedures and standards. Validate new or existing complex test methods and procedures; identify issues and recommend improvements to contribute to further development.

Safety

  • Adheres to ASML's EHS policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions; identifies and mitigates safety risks and safeguards the environment and well-being of oneself and others. Instructs the team in safe working methods and identifies instances of risky behaviors within the team and takes appropriate action, escalating serious issues as appropriate.

Project Management

  • Provide input to PL [project leader] for upcoming features in terms of content and high-level effort estimates.

Communication and Documentation

  • Document complex design choices and specifications in all phases to ensure product documentation is up to date and relevant underlying assumptions and restrictions are documented.

Knowledge
