Job Summary

Under general direction of the Employee Relations Director, this position provides a full range of employee relations services to all levels within the organization on, including consultation and support to University management, employees and designated representatives, through analysis and interpretation of University policies and procedures, applicable labor law, contract administration, problem-solving and decision-making assistance, organizational review and analysis and third party mediation and conflict resolution services. With a high degree of knowledge and expertise, this role resolves complex employee relations issues utilizing specialized employee relations expertise for a large, complex group of employees. Investigates informal and formal employee complaints, including complaints under the Abusive Conduct in the Workplace policy. Advises management on corrective actions and personnel actions and develops multi-dimensional strategies for complex and critical employment matters. Coaches and counsels managers and employees in clarifying goals and objectives, enhancing problem solving and in planning and communications skills. Designs, conducts or participates in supervisory/management training activities.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Several years demonstrated human resources experience in the field of employee and labor relations.
  • Experience working with human resources practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience providing guidance to managers and employees on all levels of employee relations issues.
  • Experience interpreting and analyzing union/labor contracts.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively.
  • Advanced knowledge of the principles related to management, supervision and leadership to provide expert level advice and counsel.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations relating to employment, compensation, employee relations, leaves and other human resources functions.
  • Skills and experience analyzing complex problems or information in an objective manner using innovative approaches and techniques to solve difficult problems with multiple variables.
  • Advanced knowledge of employee relations function and other subject areas of human resources.
  • Demonstrated skills to provide guidance to managers and employees on complex and significant employee relations issues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a healthcare or public employment environment.
  • Experience presenting employment related topics to diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of UC and UC Davis personnel policy, procedures and practices and Collective Bargaining agreements between the University and various unions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of employee and labor relations practices, procedures and law, in a HEERA collective bargaining environment.

Work Environment
