Job Duties
The Assistant Director of Fitness will serve as a fitness content expert and provide mid-level management and programming for an innovative, dynamic, and collaborative effort to promote a culture of well-being. This position will be responsible for continuing the growth, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive movement and exercise programs. The Assistant Director will work closely with colleagues to market and evaluate movement experiences and programs. This position provides direct supervision to one full-time Fitness Coordinator responsible for fitness floor operations and personal training support, one Graduate Assistant, and a team of part-time group fitness instructors. This position will also indirectly supervise numerous part-time student employees including program managers, personal trainers, small group training coaches, fitness attendants, and interns. The Assistant Director of Fitness position reports to the Director of Well-Being.

Talent Management - 45%

  • Supervise, evaluate, and develop one full-time coordinator, one graduate assistant, and multiple part-time students and interns.
  • Recommend and oversee contracted group fitness instructors and specialized personnel as needed.
  • Create and implement an employee experience strategy that supports professional growth, education opportunities, and strengths-based learning.
  • Foster a positive workplace culture through recognition, support, and appreciation of contributions
  • Role model a management style that promotes well-being and self-care.


Program Management - 45%

  • Provide mid-level management, marketing, and evaluation of a comprehensive fitness program aligned with the five essential elements of well-being.
  • Oversee delivery of movement & exercise programs including group fitness, personal training, small group training, online training, general fitness, and special events for a multi-site location.
  • Manage assigned operational, revenue, and grant budgets.
  • Recommend program related purchases, including fitness equipment, and assist with annual budget projections.
  • Assess and evaluate programs using KPIs and both quantitative and qualitative data; prepare quarterly and annual reports with recommendations.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert by creating educational content, supporting colleagues, and contributing to professional development and scholarly work
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with students, staff, faculty, and community partners to advance a culture of movement & exercise.
  • Represent CRW and ECU on committees, task forces, and community coalitions, ensuring alignment and collaboration on health-related priorities.

Instruction - 10%

  • Teach or assist with two (2) NCCA accredited instructional courses that recruits, trains, and certifies group fitness instructors and personal trainers.
  • Host and/or teach NCCA approved continuing education credit (CEC) workshops for staff to upskill and maintain certification.
  • Teach various land and aquatic based group fitness classes on an as needed basis.
  • Design and implement personalized exercise programs for clients both in-person and in online environments.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's degree required; or a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Health and Fitness, Kinesiology, or related field with 2 years of related experience.
  • Current NCCA-accredited fitness certification.
  • LesMills certification or ability to obtain within 9 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of fitness industry standards and guidelines.
  • Experience with fiscal management, mentoring, and staff development.
  • Demonstrated ability in writing, speaking, and presenting fitness related content and materials.
  • American Red Cross, CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Master's degree in Exercise Science, Health and Fitness, Kinesiology, or related field.
  • Five or more years experience supervising and evaluating fitness programs.
  • Two or more NCCA-accredited fitness certifications.
  • Experience delivering fitness programs in a college setting
  • Experience in at least two of the following areas: personal training, small group training, group fitness, exercise testing, or fitness floor management.
