Lateral Transfers: The Sheriff will determine pay and vacation for Officers transferring from another agency on a case-by-case. An Officer's years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer and their previous employers' benefits will be taken into consideration.
Deadline for filing applications is January 9, 2026.
Testing will be on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 8:30 am.
Candidates will be selected for a written test based on prior work experience and history, job performance, knowledge, skills and ability and will be notified of testing.
*Applicants with two years of full time law enforcement experience and currently employed with a law enforcement agency in a sworn position will be exempt from the written test.
Must possess the following qualifications at the time of application:
1.All applicants shall be citizens of the United States;
2.All applicants shall be 20 years of age at the time of application;
3.Applicants shall have a high school diploma or the equivalent thereof;
4.Applicants shall have an Associate Degree or sixty (60) college credits from an accredited technical school, college or university;
5.Applicants shall not have been convicted of a criminal offense equivalent to a felony or a serious misdemeanor under Wisconsin law;
6.Applicants shall be in good physical condition with weight proportioned to height;
7.Applicants must have the ability to distinguish colors;
8.Applicants must possess a valid driver's license with vision correctable to 20/20.
9.Applicants shall not have visible tattoos that are labeled violent, depict graphic violence, profanity, supremacy, drug culture, or could be interpreted as anti-government in nature. Racist or discriminatory tattoos that advocate the degradation of a person based on race, ethnicity, national origin, or gender are also prohibited. All other forms of intentional body mutilation or modification (scarring, excessive piercing/stretching, tongue splitting) are not allowed.
All applicants for the position of Deputy Sheriff who successfully complete the written examination shall be graded on the basis of thirty percent of their total score applied to the written examination and seventy percent of the total score applied to the oral examination. The number of applicants interviewed will be determined by the needs of the Department. Successful applicants will be required to successfully pass a physical examination, with a weight lifting minimum requirement of 75 lbs., audiogram and drug screening prior to appointment. A psychological examination including a polygraph may be required.
Position Summary: Under the supervision of any directly assigned superior or any other superior officer of the Department; to perform any assignment directed to him/her, to enforce Federal and State laws, and county ordinances, obey the rules and regulations of the Department and perform related work as required.
Duties/Responsibilities: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
*Enforces Federal and State laws (including Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Code) and, County ordinances.
*Performs police patrol tours of duty, protecting persons and property, and preventing crime.
*Investigates all complaints assigned to him/her.
*Investigates accidents, including taking photographs, collecting and preserving evidence, providing emergency first aid whenever necessary.
*Keeps records and writes/dictates complete, accurate and concise reports.
*Effectively utilizes a Mobile Data Terminal for informational and investigative purposes.
*Serves civil process as directed.
*Serves as courthouse security officer in the Justice Center. Provides for the secure movement of prisoners to and from the County Jail to court.
*Transports subjects to and from court or between secure facilities throughout the state.
*Directs traffic and performs law enforcement duties at special events.
*Attends court whenever necessary as witness or otherwise.
*Attends schools and in-services as directed, successfully attaining passing grades.
*Operates/drives a squad car, snowmobile, boat or other recreational or specialized vehicle as required.
*Complies with all Department Standard Operating Procedures, official orders, and directives.
*Successfully meets or exceeds the minimum standard or performance levels of those S.O.P.'s or directives that require periodic testing or certification. Examples: Maintain firearms proficiencies in department range training; obtain a passing score annually on the State of Wisconsin firearms certification course; successfully complete and maintain current certification in CPR sponsored by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross; successfully complete and maintain proficiency in the prescribed Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.
*Performs such other duties as may be required, including responding to an emergency event.

Work Direction Received: Works under the supervision of any directly assigned superior or any other superior officer of the Department.
Decision Making: Decisions are made independently.
Interaction: There is significant interaction with other law enforcement agencies, County Departments, the District Attorney's Office, the court system, and the general public.
Essential Knowledge and Abilities: Pass a written test designed to determine suitability for the position of Deputy Sheriff. Ability to assimilate knowledge of State laws and County ordinances, courtroom procedures and statutory provisions relating to arrest, search and seizure, the methods employed in crime and accident prevention, the methods employed in the apprehension of criminals and traffic offenders. Working skill in learning and applying policy principles, practices, methods, techniques, and equipment as required. Ability to assimilate knowledge of first aid practices and procedures, utilizing this knowledge effectively. Working skill in operating a motor vehicle safely. Ability in gathering information and keeping clear and concise records and reports. Considerable skill to act with judgment in emergency and stressful situations. Able to fulfill physical demands of job, sensory demands (seeing and hearing), and cognitive demands (concentration, conceptualization, memorization).

Must establish and maintain residency within Washington County or the surrounding counties (Dodge, Fond du Lac, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Sheboygan and Waukesha counties) by the end of the probationary period.
