Job Summary

SMCC is seeking an innovative, collaborative and visionary Dean of Academic Affairs. This position reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and develops, administers and evaluates instructional programs and services for all locations and modalities, the main campus, Guadalupe Center, and virtual online offerings. The Dean collaborates with faculty, staff and administration to create a cohesive, collaborative and rewarding teamwork environment.
This position oversees a broad portfolio that includes supporting all instructional programs. This includes curricular and program development and review, assessment, accreditation compliance, faculty evaluations and online learning. Other duties include guiding the work of the Center for Teaching & Learning, and directly supervising early college initiatives, the American Indian Student Center, and the Bilingual Nursing Fellowship Program. Additionally, the Dean assists with student complaint processes, and supports other administrative matters that may arise in Academic Affairs.

The Dean develops, administers, and evaluates assigned academic programs and services in alignment with District and College strategic objectives, policies, and long-range plans as required under the Dean job class specification.

The Dean leads with a data-informed approach to program development, assessment, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable driving operational effectiveness ensuring that scheduling, program review, budgeting and daily operations are strategically planned and run smoothly and efficiently.
This role requires a leader who, within a framework of collaboration and shared governance, is person-centered, solution-oriented, and committed to building relationships across the college and with internal and external partners to create pathways that promote student learning, persistence, and completion.

This position plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of assigned faculty and staff, and participates in hiring, training, coaching, performance evaluation, and discipline in accordance with District policy. It also develops and administers annual budgets, recommends capital expenditures, and ensures sound fiscal management consistent with District standards.
The Dean develops and administers policies and procedures for assigned areas, oversees quality assurance and compliance with District, state, and federal regulations, and maintains partnerships with business, industry, community, and educational agencies.

Provides leadership within a shared governance model to guide strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and academic support services in collaboration with five division chairs, faculty, and staff, while ensuring that programs and services meet educational standards and are aligned with the college's mission and goals.
Leads long-term strategic planning initiatives and develops goals, objectives, policies, and work standards consistent with District and College directives.

Fosters effective communication and collaboration across the college, among faculty, staff, administration, and community partners to promote college initiatives. Collaborates with partners to develop and promote higher education pathways, including dual enrollment and university transfer. Supports assessment of student learning, monitors data related to student success, retention, completion, scheduling, and related key performance indicators. Collaborates with departments to implement data-informed continuous improvement. Supports program reviews and other instructional initiatives. Oversees tracking systems, data collection, analysis, and follow-up required for the evaluation of academic programs and services.

Promotes faculty and staff professional development; assists college leadership with recruiting and retaining residential faculty and staff; conducts faculty and staff evaluations; participates in the department chair evaluation process. Oversees hiring, training, development, performance improvement, and discipline for assigned faculty and staff as outlined in the Dean class specification.

Represents the college and academic affairs through service on executive councils and committees, budget oversight, grant administration, compliance with district and government policies, and district assignments. Addresses student concerns related to instruction.
Serves as a college representative to external agencies, business and industry partners, health organizations, and community partners.

Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with the Dean job class specification.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Student Affairs and other non-academic pathway: Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in education or field related to area of assignment and four years of progressively responsible management and/or leadership experience in field of assignment that includes two years of supervisory experience. Examples of student affairs academic support management/leadership experience includes: program management, project management, budget development and management related to programs or projects, staff supervision, policy development, administration, evaluation and compliance. No degree equivalency.

OR

Minimum Qualifications for Academic pathway: Master's Degree in a teaching field related to area(s) of assignment and four years of experience in an academic leadership and/or supervisory role in higher education and three years of teaching that includes curriculum/coursework development. Examples of academic leadership/supervisory experience includes: division/department chair, project management, policy development, administration, evaluation and compliance, committee leadership, program director, and shared governance. No degree equivalency.

Desired Qualifications
  1. Doctoral degree in a recognized academic field of study from an accredited college or university
  2. Three (3) or more years of full-time teaching experience primarily in the community colleges
  3. Five (5) or more years of leadership experience serving as a dean, program director, department chair, or similar leadership position
  4. Experience with virtual learning and faculty development
  5. Experience with assessment of student learning, program review and accreditation
  6. Experience with Student Success initiatives such as Early College, Native American student programs, etc.
  7. Experience with management of operational budgets
  8. Experience developing and administering policies and procedures for academic programs
  9. Experience engaging in shared governance models of collaborative leadership.
