Lean Intern

Hi, I'm Dennis, looking for a Summer 2026 Lean Intern.

Who Am I?

As a Lean specialist, I lead with curiosity, respect for the people doing the work, and a strong bias for going to the Gemba to understand what is actually happening. My style is approachable and coach-like: I ask good questions, listen carefully, and help the intern learn to see waste and translate observations into clear problem statements and practical countermeasures. I am disciplined and methodical about using data, visual management, and standard work, but I keep things simple and action-oriented rather than overly theoretical. I give the intern room to own the work while staying closely engaged through quick check-ins, direct feedback, and steady support to remove barriers-always with the expectation that improvements are measurable, sustainable, and built with the team, not done to the team.

What Do We Do?

Business Unit: Lean

Our team exists to improve how the business operates by making work safer, simpler, and more reliable while delivering better performance in quality, delivery, and cost. We partner with frontline teams and leaders to identify the biggest opportunities, use Lean methods to understand root causes, and implement practical improvements that reduce waste and variation. In doing so, we build standard work, visual management, and daily management routines that help teams see problems early, respond quickly, and sustain gains over time. Ultimately, we enable the business to scale performance by developing problem-solving capability and creating processes that consistently meet customer needs.

Ongoing Projects

Day to day, our team balances hands-on support in the operation with structured improvement work. We spend time in the gemba observing how work is performed, validating performance through data, and helping teams surface and prioritize problems using daily management routines. We facilitate rapid problem solving (e.g., 5 Whys, Pareto, cause-and-effect), coach leaders and frontline staff on standard work and visual controls, and coordinate small experiments to test countermeasures with minimal disruption. In parallel, we maintain a portfolio of CI projects-tracking milestones, risks, and benefits-while supporting sustainment through audits, KPI reviews, and leadership updates to ensure improvements stick and become part of normal management.

Your Role as an Intern

You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:

The Lean Intern will support the Continuous Improvement function by assisting with the identification, prioritization, and execution of high-level Lean initiatives within a defined process area. The scope includes partnering with the process owner to understand current performance, conducting basic data collection and observations to identify waste and improvement opportunities, supporting structured problem solving and documentation of key processes, and helping coordinate low-risk pilots that improve safety, quality, delivery, and productivity. In addition, the intern will help create a Daily Management dashboard that enables consistent day-to-day performance visibility by aligning key metrics to team goals (e.g., safety, quality, delivery, cost), defining metric definitions and data sources, establishing a simple cadence for daily review and escalation, and preparing an initial visual format (digital or board-based) that can be maintained by the process owner after handoff.
