Summary:

The Senior Intellectual Property Manager plays a critical role in supporting and advancing the company's intellectual property (IP) protection strategy within a dynamic, highly regulated medical device environment. This individual will manage day-to-day IP operations and drive initiatives related to patent, trademark, and copyright protection. The role involves coordinating IP filings, conducting and interpreting IP searches, analyzing results for infringement and validity, and maintaining comprehensive documentation. The ideal candidate brings experience in IP portfolio management, ideally from the medical device industry. This is a professional-level role that demands strong technical fluency and the ability to work with Product Development, Business Development, and external partners to identify protectable innovations and support commercialization efforts.

In This Role, You Will:

Intellectual Property Strategy & Operations



  • Assist in the development and implementation of IP protection strategies, including for patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
  • Maintain IP workflows and documentation to ensure compliance and efficiency in a regulated environment.
  • Coordinate efforts of outside counsel and IP-related vendors.
  • Become expert in IP software platforms for portfolio management and competitive analysis.


Patent Portfolio Development



  • Serve as the primary IP liaison to product development teams, attending concept reviews, design sprints, and engineering standups.
  • Coordinate the drafting, filing, and prosecution of patent applications in collaboration with internal teams and external counsel.
  • Initiate and interpret patent and prior art searches; prepare analyses of results related to infringement, validity, and competitive positioning.


Competitor and Risk Assessment



  • Conduct patent landscape reviews to identify potential risks and opportunities.
  • Provide recommendations on patent strategy based on search results and competitive analysis.
  • Work with internal and external partners on technology scouting and competitive IP intelligence.
  • Provide portfolio insights to management to inform make/buy/partner decisions.


Other IP Functions



  • Serve as primary point of contact for outside counsel for trademark portfolio management and rasie relevant issues with Marketing and Legal as needed.
  • Maintain trade secret program.
  • Coordinate copyright registrations with outside counsel as needed.


Who You Will Report To:



  • General Counsel


Requirements:



  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, applied science, or related technical field.
  • Demonstrated experience with electrical engineering; software engineering; or biomedical engineering with EE/software concentration providing strong technical capability in electronics, firmware, or algorithms.
  • Current US Patent Bar registration; JD not required.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in patent prosecution, with at least 3 years demonstrated experience in patent portfolio management.
  • At least 3 years supporting IP in a medical device or digital health industry strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of IP management systems.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills, with a proactive, solution-oriented approach.
  • Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion and ensure alignment with corporate and regulatory standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Work Location: Pleasanton (hybrid schedule between work-from-home and headquarters; must attend regular product development meetings on site)
  • Travel: Approximately 5%.
  • Must be able to sit for up to 8 hours/day.

  • A competitive base salary of $160,000 - $185,000 and variable incentive plan
