Job Summary

The tractor operator drives gasoline or diesel-powered tractor with a mower attachment (over 3000 lbs.) to mow open field areas and roadsides. The tractor operator fastens attachments such as aerator, broadcast spreader to tractor, inspect equipment for proper operation prior to each use, lubricates and reports needed repairs to to the mechanic.

Primary Duties

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. These duties and responsibilities will be rated on the Annual Performance Review.

  • Responsible for the completion of mowing in assigned areas according to contract requirements.
  • Perform all daily and periodic inspections and maintenance tasks.
  • Learn assigned mowing area and routes. Know the areas your equipment can and cannot be used.
  • Check with the supervisor daily for any specific instructions.
  • Use equipment only for work it was intended for in order to avoid damage to the equipment, the grounds, and other property.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Know all safety rules concerning your equipment and work accordingly.
  • Ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed, e.g. PPE worn, proper work methods used, and equipment safety devices are in place and operating.
  • Immediately bring any safety issues to the attention of the mechanic.
  • Observe established break times and beginning and end of workday times.
  • Perform quality, safe, and efficient work.
  • Responsible for the security of assigned equipment so it is not stolen, damaged or misplaced.
  • Follows established break and lunch times.
  • Expected to operate all grounds equipment with the grounds crews when tractor is not in use.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Certification(s)

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED) preferred.
  • 2 years experience operating tractors with flail mowers, rotary mowers, or similar attachments, or equal experience on commercial mowers rated at 55 HP or above preferred.
  • Must be able to gain access to Ft. Bragg Army base.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Ability to operate mowing equipment, demonstrating the ability to handle equipment responsibly.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
