The Pharmacy Technician Specialist I assists pharmacists in preparing, compounding, and dispensing medications and is accountable to the supervising pharmacist who is legally responsible for the care and safety of the patients served by the pharmacy. As a Pharmacy Technician Specialist I, the coworker may engage more complex medication distribution processes, have additional department responsibilities, and/or function in specialized areas of responsibility.

Pharmacy Technician Specialist I
Location: Riverport Pharmacy Schedule: Full-Time, 40 Hours/Week (Days)
Position Summary
The Pharmacy Technician Specialist I supports pharmacists by preparing, compounding, and dispensing medications while upholding the highest standards of patient safety. This role may work in specialized medication distribution areas and handle more advanced responsibilities within the department. All work is performed under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and in accordance with federal and state regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Enter data accurately into EPIC.
- Complete department-approved sterile compounding training.
- Prepare and compound nonsterile medications, including NIOSHclassified hazardous drugs.
- Prepare and compound chemotherapy sterile products.
- Prepare advanced sterile preparations (e.g., TPN, NICU formulations).
- Retrieve, count, and mix medications for pharmacist dispensing.
- Accurately fill medication orders in a timely manner.
- Receive, manage, and secure drug inventory.
- Deliver verified medications to patient care areas.
- Retrieve and credit unused medications when appropriate.
- Follow hazardous waste and quality assurance procedures.
- Check assigned areas for outdated medications and maintain equipment sanitation.
- Prioritize workflow based on patient needs using sound judgment.
- Participate in process improvement, Medication Use Evaluations, and quality assurance initiatives.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Licensure
- Active registration with the State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician, or willingness to apply by first day (including fingerprinting for FBI background check).
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant pharmacy experience required.
Certifications
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through PTCB (required within 6 months of hire).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of pharmacy equipment, including robotic dispensing systems and automated dispensing cabinets.
- Mastery of pharmacy dispensing, standard compounding, adjudication, financial assistance tools, POS systems, ordering, and inventory workflows as applicable.
- Proficiency with pharmacy automation, workflow management systems, and electronic health record applications.
- Strong patient and customer service skills.
- Ability to train and orient new team members.
- Flexibility to work in various roles and float to other pharmacy locations as needed.
- Ability to troubleshoot pharmacy automation systems.
- Strong timemanagement skills and ability to work under time constraints.
- Ability to interpret medical information and lab values relevant to pharmacist review or medication authorization.
