Summary:

The Associate Counsel is responsible for providing legal support and advice to the hospital and its affiliates under the guidance of senior legal personnel. This position reports to the Vice President, Senior Associate Counsel position.

Responsibilities:

1. Conduct legal research and analysis to support various legal matters, including contract review, compliance issues and potential litigation.

2. Assist in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts, drafts policies and procedures related to hospital operations and other legal matters, and provides on-demand legal advice and counsel for departments across the health system.

3. Collaborate with other departments such as human resources, finance, and medical staff to address legal issues.

4. Provides support for special projects and matters as assigned by the Chief Legal Officer.

Technical Expertise:

  1. Knowledge of Ohio and Federal healthcare regulations, including HIPAA, Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, False Claims Act, and Medicare/Medicaid.
  2. Drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills and a demonstrated ability to provide clear, actionable advice to internal clients across the health system.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  4. Experience in one or more of the following practice areas: physician contracting, corporate transactions, governance, patient privacy, and consent laws for minors.

Education and Experience:

1. Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school is required.

2. Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio (or ability to obtain licensure) is required.

3. Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, with a focus on healthcare law is preferred.

4. Prior in-house counsel experience preferred, ideally in a healthcare organization.
