POSITION SPECIFICS

Postdoctoral Scholar - Structural Virology

The Department of Cell and Biological Systems at Penn State University College of Medicine (Hershey, PA) invites applications for a full-time, NIH-funded Postdoctoral Scholar position in structural virology. This position offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the structural biology of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in mammalian cells using state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy-based approaches. The postdoctoral scholar will contribute to ongoing projects to define structural and mechanistic changes in HBV during its replication cycle. Depending on background and expertise, the position is suitable for candidates with a strength inmolecular virology/HBV biologyor incryo-electron microscopy and cellular imaging, with complementary training provided.

Two candidate profiles are particularly encouraged:

HBV / Molecular Virology:
Candidates with strong expertise in HBV biology, mammalian cell culture, and molecular virology techniques, including virus production, purification, and biochemical characterization. Training in cryo-EM and structural analysis will be provided. Cryo-EM / Cellular Imaging:
Candidates with hands-on experience in cryo-electron microscopy-based methods, including high-resolution single-particle reconstruction and/or cryo-electron tomography with FIB-SEM. Training in HBV biology, cell culture, and virological techniques will be provided.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree) in structural virology, virology, structural biology, biophysics, cell biology, or a closely related field by the time of appointment
  • Strong motivation, independence, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and interest in mentoring trainees

This is a limited term appointment funded for one year from date of hire.
