We are seeking a qualified attorney for a position in the UnitedHealthcare legal department for the West Region for the Network Legal Team. The lawyer in this role will support the UnitedHealthcare Network team in their work developing and managing UnitedHealthcare's network of hospitals, physicians and other providers for its commercial, Medicare and Medicaid plans. The lawyer will directly participate in the negotiation of the largest provider contracts in their assigned states and support a large team of UHN personnel in a variety of legal needs, including pre-litigation contractual disputes and negotiations. This position will also support enterprise-wide priorities related to the provider network including affordability projects and innovative new product expansions.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal support for certain West Region network markets, including California, on the Network Legal Team
  • Work collaboratively with a team of attorneys and legal professionals across the enterprise
  • Serve as counsel to leadership in the development, structuring and execution of all aspects of the company's relationships with healthcare providers
  • Draft and negotiate contracts with our largest and most complex health care provider partners
  • Manage the resolution of disputes, support arbitration proceedings and draft settlement agreements
  • Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and the specific business practices of the company's provider network operations

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • License to practice law in one or more states
  • 5+ years of relevant professional legal experience in an attorney capacity
  • Experience in advising senior leadership on legal matters
  • Experience with drafting and negotiating complex contracts
  • Experience with highly regulated industries
  • Experience collaborating across a legal team
  • Proven ability to drive results
  • Proven solid work ethic
  • Proven well-developed written and verbal communications skills
  • Proven ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business needs
  • Proven ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates and external company contacts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing pre-litigation matters
  • Experience with capitated provider arrangements
  • Experience with healthcare regulatory agencies
  • Experience with capitated contracts
  • Understanding of healthcare benefit coverage
  • Understanding of health insurance and managed care industry
  • Knowledge of relevant Federal and West Region state laws and regulations

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $134,600 to $230,800 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
