BASIC FUNCTION

A Safety Lead is responsible for directing safety representatives in supporting, maintaining and meeting company safety standards within production including ensuring people, processes, and the workplace are compliant with occupational safety and health regulations.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (YEARS)

  • Seven (7) years of working within a manufacturing or shipyard environment with at least three (3) years of relevant experience in the safety field preferred.

MINIMUM SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing or shipyard environments with particular emphasis on techniques and equipment involved.
  • Ability to effectively build and lead a productive work group and to perform as a member of a management team.
  • Proven leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • Ability to maintain accurate, current records and generate complete and timely reports.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal and regulations related to safety, health and environmental.
  • Basic knowledge of safety techniques and first aid.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Monitors safety functions and support production personnel and supervisors by answering questions, giving guidance, resolving problems, etc.
  • Overseeing and directing safety representatives in supporting, maintaining and meeting company safety standards within production including ensuring people, processes, and the workplace are compliant with occupational safety and health regulations.
  • Works under general direction of Safety Coordinator.
  • The expectation of this position is to be on the deck plate 100% of the shift.
  • Monitors, enforces and ensures continued adherence of safety rules and procedures.
  • Educates/supports safety representatives, employees and supervisors on proper safety practices and techniques.
  • Meets with production supervisors in coordinating craft leadership in addressing safety aspects of work being performed.
  • Ensures compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Assists in investigating reported concerns of unsafe working conditions.
  • Responds to workplace safety emergencies and issues.
  • Supports department in conducting safety meetings and trainings.
  • Trains and motivates workforce to result in high levels of productivity.
  • Addresses daily personnel, equipment and facility issues; develops viable solutions and remedial actions.
  • Assists in inspecting machines and equipment for accident prevention devices.
  • Assists in observing workers to determine use of prescribed safety equipment, i.e., hard hats, safety goggles, steel toe boots, etc. and make sure workers are in compliance with safety rules and procedures.
  • Assists in inspecting specified areas for fire-prevention equipment and other safety and first-aid supplies.
  • Assists with the investigations of incidents to determine a cause and suggest prevention methods.
  • Identifies and addresses safety issues that arise on the deck plate. \
    • Addresses on-site challenges and resolve conflicts.
    • Completes daily task sheet documents.
    • Must be able to work in confined/enclosed spaces.
    • Must be able to work/climb in elevations greater than 5'.
    • Must be able to wear/work a respirator when applicable.
    • Must follow all Company policies and procedures, including those relative to employee safety, environmental policy, and the principles of our quality system.
    • Other duties assigned or requested by Management.
    • Works overtime as required.
