Job Summary

The Traveling Data Center Field Engineer is an onsite role responsible for providing day-to-day engineering support across multiple data center construction projects nationwide. This position reports to senior field engineering leadership and supports project execution through testing oversight, documentation control, field verification, and coordination with cross-functional teams. Projects range from 2 to 12 months in duration, with travel required and return home approximately every 90 days. Assignments may include locations such as Phoenix, the greater Southwest region, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Buffalo, Sterling, and Indiana. This role requires strong technical expertise in structured cabling and low voltage systems within colocation and hyperscale data center environments.

Job Responsibilities




  • Provide onsite engineering support and report directly to senior field engineering leadership.



  • Manage tester operations, review and compile test results, and oversee label printing and documentation control.



  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment and system issues, including testing system components and verifying field installations for quality and accuracy.



  • Interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documents to ensure compliance with quality and reporting requirements.



  • Assist senior field engineers with red-lined drawings and complete project test documentation at closeout.



  • Conduct detailed field walks for prospective work and change order opportunities; prepare written scope narratives, system outlines, and constructability notes to support estimating efforts.



  • Identify and document existing site conditions, infrastructure constraints, and access limitations to inform bid strategies and value engineering options.



  • Coordinate with subcontractors during pre-construction activities, including site walks, scope alignment reviews, and proposal collection.



  • Serve as a technical liaison between field operations and pre-construction or estimating teams to support design intent and field feasibility.



  • Assist sales teams with product and system demonstrations as needed.



  • Support quality and training initiatives by developing or delivering structured guidance on project setup, documentation organization, workflow planning, and startup execution when workload allows.



  • Promote best practices related to job readiness, closeout procedures, and documentation management.




Job Requirements




  • Field Engineer I: 2-4 years of commercial low voltage or structured cabling experience, preferably in new construction data center environments.



  • Field Engineer II: 4-6 years of commercial low voltage or structured cabling experience, preferably in new construction data center environments.



  • Proven ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical project documentation.



  • Experience working with fiber optic testers, interpreting test results, and compiling documentation for client presentation.



  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills in structured cabling and related systems.



  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Bluebeam, and Oracle software; familiarity with Procore and BIM is preferred.



  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain productivity in dynamic project environments.



  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing work conditions.



  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with quality teams, site leadership, estimating, and subcontractors.



  • Experience in hyperscale data center environments strongly preferred.



  • Experience in colocation and new construction environments, including working from job site trailers.




Education




  • High school diploma or equivalent required.



  • Technical training or industry certifications related to structured cabling or fiber optics preferred.




Work Experience




  • 2-6 years of relevant commercial low voltage or structured cabling experience, depending on level.



  • Prior experience supporting large-scale data center construction projects preferred.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Travel-based role with project assignments ranging from 2 to 12 months.



  • Employees return home approximately every 90 days.



  • Work schedules vary by project and may include:




    • Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (40-hour workweek), or



    • Monday through Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (extended schedule).





  • Work is performed in active construction environments, including hyperscale and colocation data centers.
