Departmental Overview

The Graduate Division works to guide and assist students from the moment of application for admission, through the various milestones of their programs, to the completion of their degree requirements. We provide academic, personal, and professional support services that are vital to the everyday well-being and life-long successes of Berkeley master's, professional, and doctoral students.

As the authoritative resource and chief advocate for graduate education, the Graduate Division ensures the equitable administration of policies governing graduate studies across Berkeley's 14 schools and colleges. As the administrative arm of the Academic Senate's Graduate Council, we partner with the faculty and staff of each program and the deans of each school and college to maintain the world-renowned quality of Berkeley's graduate education.

The Graduate Division is committed to expanding the diversity of Berkeley's student body and supporting students from all backgrounds, especially those from underrepresented groups, in their academic, personal and professional journeys.

GradPro is the campus graduate student career development resource hub. This office supports graduate students through all stages of exploring and preparing for a wide range of careers, within and beyond academia. GradPro also works with departments and faculty on developing discipline-specific professional development programming for graduate students.

GradPro's work is guided by the policies of the Graduate Council and its Advisory Committee for Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Scholar Professional Development. The Director reports to the Assistant Dean for Professional Development.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Professional Development, this position functions as the day-to-day program manager of GradPro. Located within the Graduate Division's Graduate Professional Development unit, GradPro offers advising, workshops, presentations, and administrative services in support of graduate professional development and career exploration to graduate students, faculty, academic departments, and student organizations.

This position functions as the campuswide outreach, advising, and coordination hub for graduate professional development and career exploration resources and initiatives. This position is responsible for promoting professional and career development through outreach, communications, and resource development at all levels of campus, and also serves as the Graduate Division liaison to relevant internal and external partners.

Responsibilities

  • Hires, trains, and supervises a team of 4 graduate student Professional Development Liaisons (PDLs) for outreach, advising, and communications.
  • Manages program improvement processes.
  • Researches, designs, and develops presentations, workshops and programs to connect students with professional development and career exploration resources to assist them in meeting their professional development and career planning needs.
  • Conducts departmental outreach to design and launch career exploration programming.
  • Presents sensitive information about needs assessment and graduate student survey results to department chairs, graduate advisers, staff, and graduate students.
  • Oversees communications, including bimonthly Professional Development Digest, and resource development, and uses thorough knowledge of career exploration resources and systems to improve and redesign websites and other supporting technologies.
  • Develops and oversees delivery of broad and complex professional development and career exploration focused programs and events in collaboration with campus partners and constituents.
  • Provides and oversees career exploration counseling in particularly complex areas that require specialized expertise, such as PhD students who are investigating either academic careers or those outside academia.
  • Researches and informs senior leadership about emerging trends in graduate professional development and career exploration nationally and within the UC system; and new internships and professional development opportunities for Berkeley graduate students.
  • Gives input to Senate committees on policies and procedures impacting graduate student professional development and career exploration.
  • Assists graduate students in establishing new relationships with alumni, corporations and other organizations related to career services for students and alumni to promote experiential professional development and career exploration opportunities and enhance the campus's relationship with outside organizations.
  • Participates in Graduate Division staff meetings, retreats and professional development.
  • Other duties as determined by the supervisor.

  • Advanced skills in successfully mentoring and supervising the work of junior colleagues.
  • Advanced knowledge of career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, employment trends and can quickly learn UC programs.
  • Advanced skills in problem identification and analysis; project design, management and assessment; making presentations to a variety of audiences; oral and written communication.
  • Advanced skills in fostering and maintaining collaborations across a wide range of units and campus partners.
  • Strong skills in digital communication, including updating and maintaining websites
  • Demonstrated advanced ability to work effectively and collaborate with individuals and groups from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that promotes collaboration and mutual respect among all members of the UC Berkeley community and its stakeholders.
  • Advanced knowledge of the field of graduate student professional and career development and of current trends and effective practices in supporting graduate students as they prepare for careers.
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $82,800.00 - $116,300.00.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
