Job Description

The Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) develops, implements, administers, and directs university programs in the areas of environmental compliance, chemical storage and handling, hazardous waste, environmental management systems, radiation, biosafety, industrial hygiene, and general safety. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations and university policies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The EHS Director provides leadership related to a broad change of environmental health and safety programs and establishes successful relationships with key stakeholders across the university.

  • Advises and assists peers and senior management.
  • Manages vendor relationships.
  • Reviews and approves departmental operating expenditures.
  • Develops departmental budget requests and written narratives.
  • Identifies and solves complex, operational and organizational problems, leveraging the appropriate resources from within or outside the department.
  • Impacts the department results by supporting and funding of projects, services, etc.
  • Persuade managers and leaders to take action to improve safety and mitigate exposure to risks.
  • Represent the university during interactions with outside agencies at the local, state and federal level.

Critical Knowledge and Skills

  • Use tact and diplomacy to handle a broad range of high-level and sensitive interpersonal situations and respond appropriately when conflicts arise
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups
  • Ability to concisely present complex narratives, situations, and data to senior leadership
  • Knowledge of laws, codes, and regulations applicable to the broad field of environmental health and safety
  • Knowledge of and practical experience with institutional planning and budgeting processes
  • Ability to lead and manage multiple operations; ability to manage a variety of tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Excellent organizational and management skills
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and;
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired
Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a field relevant to Environmental Health and Safety
  • Management experience within a college or university EHS department
  • One or more professional certifications:
    • Certified Industrial Hygienist
    • Certified Safety Professional
    • Certified Hazardous Material Manager
    • Registered Environmental Manager
    • Other
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $120,000 - $135,000 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.

Your total compensation goes beyond the number on your paycheck. The University of Missouri provides generous leave, health plans, and retirement contributions that add to your bottom line.
