PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Regularly performs the duties and responsibilities of the Ophthalmology Staff RN for a specific patient population on a regular basis, performs as a Staff Nurse no more than 80% of scheduled time.

2. Makes daily staff work assignments based on patient acuity and clinical competence of staff. May recommend staffing requirements for the next shift.

3. Makes patient rounds, evaluates nursing/unit activities, sets patient care priorities and recommends operational changes to enhance services of the unit.

4. Supervises nursing/patient care staff, including orienting, training, counseling, and evaluating.

5. Interprets and communicates hospital and division nursing philosophy, policies, procedures, and established standards of care and practice. Assists in the development of department goals, objectives, policies and procedures.

6. Maintains adequate supplies, equipment, etc. for operations of unit. Makes appropriate recommendations to control the operational budget.

7. Participates in the unit Quality Improvement activities.

8. Serves as a communication liaison between patients, families, staff, and physicians, and reports critical consequences of actions taken to Coordinator or Manager.

9. Complies with hospital and professional license, certification, inservice, and training requirements, and committee and conference participation as appropriate for position. Maintains familiarity with nursing care issues relating to medical problems, surgical procedures, and diagnostic studies, and technical training in the use of equipment pertinent to area.

10. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/visitor/patient injuryaccident to Manger or Director.

11. Operating Room Ophthalmology Clinical Supervisor supports the Ophthalmology service in both the outpatient surgery center, as well as the main hospital for those patients who do not meet criteria for an outpatient surgery center. This includes but is not limited to ensuring adequate supply inventory is stocked and available for procedures, clinical staffing supports the need of the service in both locations, instrumentation is readily available, as well ensures that all equipment is functioning properly.

12. Operating Room Ophthalmology Clinical Supervisor may join the call rotation at times of peak season, higher than normal case volumes, during staffing shortages, or at the discretion of the Clinical Manager.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Other duties as assigned by supervision.

REQUIRED

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. a. Three (3) years' experience in clinical area with a minimum of one (1) year in area of specialty OR b. Bachelor's in Nursing with Two (2) years experience in clinical area with a minimum of one (1) year in area of specialty
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and make appropriate clinical and supervisory decisions. Must possess good problem solving skills.
  • Successful completion of a management course prior to appointment, or within six (6) months of employment.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Other certifications such as ACLS, PALS, NRP may be required based on department needs.

PREFERRED

  • National certification in specialty.
  • Member of professional organization (i.e. ASORN, AORN, ASPAN)
  • Previous management/charge nurse experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience in nursing with minimum of one (1) year in area of specialty.
  • B.S. degree in Nursing.
