The Director of Claims administers a comprehensive claims management program for the University of Illinois Chicago. This includes managing a claims office consisting of claims managers, claims analysts and support staff. The office investigates and evaluates incidents for the University and its Self-Insurance Program, establishes claim reserves, negotiates settlements and assists in the defense of lawsuits against the University and its personnel. The vast majority of claims and litigation arise out of medical malpractice issues, some of which may result in significant multi-million dollar claims, and also includes healthcare professionals' licensing issues and general public liability matters.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Plan, organize and administer a comprehensive claims management program for professional medical liability and general liability matters at UI Health and the University of Illinois Chicago (including operations in Peoria, Rockford and other locations), and initiate and participate in the procurement of outside counsel services. (30%)
  2. Identify, supervise and assist outside attorneys representing the University and physicians and other University employees named as defendants and/or respondents in discovery in the management of litigation, including trials and settlements. Act as lead negotiator or delegate authority as appropriate in the resolution of litigated cases or patient claims. (30%)
  3. Work directly with physicians, nurses, other health care professionals, and university officers, administrators and employees to investigate professional and public liability claims and respond to third party subpoenas. Advise the medical staff, hospital employees, and other university employees on the proper handling of occurrences. (20%)
  4. Keep University Counsel and Campus Legal Counsel informed of matters which may pose significant risk to/interest for The Board of Trustees, President, Chancellor or other senior administrators. Provide detailed information related to significant matters for reports to The Board of Trustees, including trial outcomes. (5%)
  5. In coordination with the University Counsel and other attorneys in the OUC, prepare reports analyzing and outlining factual matters, expert witness opinions, legal fees and other risk/cost factors, including appropriate recommendations for utilization by the Medical Malpractice Action Group. (5%)
  6. Recommend new or revised policies, procedures or practices related to the identification, evaluation and defense of professional and general liability claims against the University, including evaluation of claims for the purpose of reserving funds under the Self-Insurance program. (5%)
  7. Other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned. (5%)

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  2. Demonstrated experience with medical malpractice and general liability claims.

Senior Director:
  1. Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  2. At least 6 years of demonstrated experience with medical malpractice and general liability claims.


Preferred:
  1. Master's degree in a related field.
  2. Demonstrated excellence in managing medical and dental malpractice and general liability claims and litigation and supervising a claims management office.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  1. Demonstrated leadership abilities, including a history of working with attorneys.
  2. Demonstrated teamwork abilities, including accessibility, communication, guidance and support to clients, staff and other key stakeholders.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with physicians, health care providers, departmental officials/staff and external attorneys.
  4. Demonstrated ability to assess risk, forecast, and provide advice in prudently defending and managing claims and litigation.
  5. Experience with insurance issues, including the determination of coverage, excess insurance reporting requirements and collaboration with excess carriers on high exposure cases.
  6. Ability to successfully prioritize, delegate and manage a high-volume of work.


APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a Full Time academic professional position. The expected start date is as soon as possible. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position. System Office jobs such as this one are not eligible for the Referral Program.

The budgeted salary range for the position is $185,000.00 - 225,000.00. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
