Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL)'s Office of Institutional Planning and Communications is seeking a highly experienced graphic designer to join our growing team. This role demands a creative professional with diverse skills, proven leadership capabilities, and the ability to deliver exceptional design solutions across multiple mediums. The candidate will collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other professionals across SRNL to conceptualize and produce compelling visual content that advances SRNL's communication objectives and fosters understanding among diverse audiences.
- Creative Collaboration: Partner with internal customers across SRNL to understand communication goals, brainstorm ideas, and deliver creative solutions tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Content Creation: Design and produce visual content including print layouts (e.g., magazines, annual reports, brochures), data visualizations, graphic illustrations, motion graphics, and digital media within established deadlines.
- Brand Stewardship: Develop designs that align with the SRNL Visual Identity Guide, creating branded templates and assets that reinforce a cohesive organizational identity.
- Scientific Visualization: Translate complex scientific processes, numerical data, and technical concepts into visually appealing, clear, and accessible formats for public and internal dissemination.
- Project Management: Independently manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritizing deadlines, and resolving conflicts to meet stakeholder needs.
- Prototyping & Iteration: Develop and refine designs through a customer feedback process, ensuring solutions align with strategic communication goals and resonate with target audiences.
- Technical Innovation: Utilize the latest tools, trends, and software platforms to ensure designs remain cutting-edge and effective. This may include advanced 3D modeling, animation, and interactive storytelling techniques.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with photographers, videographers, web developers, editors, and writers to deliver integrated visual campaigns and content.
- Mentoring & Leadership: Guide less experienced designers, fostering a culture of innovation, learning, and excellence within the Communications Office.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Multimedia, or a related field, plus seven (7)+ years of directly related experience. Advanced degrees may substitute for some experience.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud Applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver) and related design tools.
- Expertise in translating scientific and technical data into compelling visuals for both scientific and general audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work across print, digital, and video media to meet diverse communication needs.
- For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is Legally Required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in 3D modeling, key-frame animation, and creating texture/lighting maps for visualization.
- Prior experience at a DOE National Laboratory or technical environment, especially within the nuclear energy, nuclear waste, or broader scientific research industry.
- Familiarity with brand identity and development of consistent templates aligned with institutional guidelines.
- Advanced skills in UI/UX design, environmental design, or motion graphics.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- Experience mentoring or managing production teams across print, web, and digital media.
Work Environment This role is based at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) in Aiken, South Carolina. While primarily onsite, there is the potential for hybrid work arrangements based on project deliverables.
