Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

This Collections Steward will report to the Director of Collections Programs ( DCP) and help further the Museum's cultural stewardship goals with respect to NAGPRA compliance, outreach and relationship building with Indigenous communities, care of sensitive collections, and project management support for collections-related projects.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide project management support to DCP in overseeing cultural hall deinstallations
  • Support the DCP in facilitating and tracking NAGPRA and non-NAGPRA consultations with Indigenous communities related to collections access, stewardship, and exhibition
  • Support logistics for virtual and in-person visits with descendant community members who wish to consult on collections stewardship initiatives
  • Record Tribal consultations related to NAGPRA's Duty of Care requirements in the Anthropology database
  • Collaborate with the Anthropology Collections Management, Science Conservation, and Cultural Resources Office teams to integrate community guidance into collections care practices by recording information in Anthropology's database and supporting any necessary re-housing
  • Support centralization of notes and records related to the Museum's cultural stewardship efforts to facilitate information sharing with internal stakeholders
  • Provide research support to the DCP on sensitive collections to further the Museum's stewardship goals
  • Provide project management support to the Human Remains Collections Care Project, as needed
  • Conduct archival research to respond to inquiries from Indigenous communities related to collections stewardship


The expected salary range for the Collections Steward is $66,500 /annual - $70,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in anthropology, museum studies or another related field.
  • Minimum of three years working experience.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including proficiency with databases and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in collections management and working with Anthropology collections.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in relationship building with Indigenous communities highly valued.
  • Master's degree in anthropology or related field.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
