This position is the supervisor for custodial staff for our third shift academic buildings. This position performs daily cleaning activities in office, classroom, research, and academic buildings. The position is responsible for planning and directing work activities for assistant custodial supervisor and custodial staff, following a daily and seasonal plan for custodial services. This position is also responsible for providing appropriate skills-related training, and for physically completing custodial work as required. This position requires the use of operating work issued vehicles.

Work schedule: Sunday-Thursday 10:30pm-7am

Job Description
60% - Supervision, Planning, and Operations Oversight
  • Distributes custodial work assignments to staff and ensures coverage services in the absence of colleagues or the immediate supervisor.
  • Provides direct daily supervision to monitor staff progress, evaluate effectiveness, identify training needs, and ensure proper cleaning methods of buildings and cleaning tools are followed.
  • Ensures adherence to established work schedules and conducts daily inspections of assigned facilities to verify quality standards are met.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings to review assignments, schedules, equipment use and care, staff development needs, and responses to unique or unexpected situations.
  • Performs quality inspections and ensures timely followup on identified deficiencies with staff.
  • Recommends candidates for hire when vacancies occur and ensures effective staffing levels and efficient use of resources.
  • Develops and implements procedures to optimize the use of staff time, labor, and equipment in support of daily operations and future assignments.
  • Establishes work schedules and conducts performance evaluations of all subordinate staff.
  • Serves as oncall supervisor on a rotating basis for afterhours emergencies.
  • Oversee and/or perform performance review and activities for the assigned unit.
30% - Administrative and Compliance Responsibilities
  • Reviews time and labor reports, absence management records, and submits information appropriately.
  • Approves leave requests and monitors leave balances for assigned staff.
  • Submits annual physical inventory in accordance with Comptroller's Office requirements and timelines.
  • Shares responsibility for meeting requirements defined in service level agreements
10% - Other assigned tasks:
  • Follows safety policies regarding use of supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Performs other duties related to cleaning or maintenance as needed including working at similar tasks in another facility to cover for absent staff or extra staffing needs.
  • Assist Custodial staff as needed with moving appliances and supplies in and out of halls as directed to clean. Reports and turns-in lost items to appropriate persons.
  • Receive any suspicious incident or persons reports and report to KUPD or Complex Director staff.
  • Participates in training sessions and in-service classes or workshops.

Position Requirements
  1. Ability to lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds frequently and the ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds occasionally with or without accommodation.
  2. Ability to bend, stoop and/or kneel frequently.
  3. Ability to work on step ladders.
  4. Physical strength sufficient to stand the strain of working long hours at custodial tasks.
  5. Willingness and ability to work overtime as needed.
  6. Willingness and ability to work under a variety of extreme temperature and weather.

Required Qualifications
  1. High School diploma or completion of G.E.D. equivalency.
  2. Five (5) years of custodial experience with three (3) years of experience as a supervisor.
  3. A valid driver's license by time of hire and maintained throughout employment
  4. Experience using MS Office, including Outlook and Word as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Custodial experience in a large commercial or institutional setting as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) experience as evidenced by application materials.
  3. More than three years supervisory/leadership experience.
