Overview:

We are seeking anElectrical Engineering Leadwho will focus onand take ownership ofthe electrical engineeringscopeof the magnetic field generationsystemsfor theacceleratorsystemsintheSecond Target Station(STS)project,andalsoact as the STS cableconfiguration and procurement leadwith responsibilityfor the implementationand managementof thecablingdesign,procurementand installationprocess for theSTSproject as a whole.This positionresidesin theAccelerator Systems(AS)group of theSecond Target Station project, NeutronUpgrades Project OfficeatOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ownership of the design and integration of electrical systems associated with magnets, power supplies, beam diagnostics, vacuumcontrollersand control interfaces within theASscope,

  • Ensuring that electrical designs meet thetechnical andEnvironmental, Safety,Healthand Quality(ESH&Q)requirements

  • Act as Control Account Manager for magnet power suppliesand cabling inthe ASscope

  • Provide support for procurement,installationand testingofelectrical systems in AS scope

  • Chair the STS Electrical Safety and Standardization Committee, responsible forevaluating and approving newcable types for use by the project and reviewing suitability ofexistingapproved cables forparticular applicationswithin the project(in terms ofelectrical characteristics, electrical safety, fire safety, signal integrity, radiation resistance, standardization, availabilityetc.)

  • Writing and executing the cable management plan for the STS Project, includingspecifying and selecting a software toolto support 3D CAD modeling of cableruns andpreparing a staffing planto supporttheimplementation

  • Ensuring STScable designsand installationsarecode compliant

  • Coordinating design with STS Structural Engineers to ensure seismic qualification ofcablingsupports where required by code

  • Interfacing with InstallationCoordinatorsduring the installation of cables and associated hardware

  • Develop strong working relationships across the projectand SNS Operationswith CAMs, line managers, vendors, sponsors, and project support organizations including ES&H, QA, procurement, business, project controls, and human resources

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS inelectricalengineering or related field with 10 or more years of relevant work experience oranMS inelectricalengineering or related field with 8 or more years of relevant work experience.

  • Experience designing andmaintaininghigh powerAC and DCelectrical systems.

  • Good understanding ofindustry codes and standards related to electrical installations andelectricalsafety requirements, includingNFPA 70National Electrical Code, NFPA70EElectrical Safety in the Workplace, Underwriter Laboratories Standards, etc.

  • Experience creating engineering drawings, specifications, procedures,reportsand plans.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of AC power distribution concepts

  • Knowledge ofDC and pulsedpower suppliesof the typesused inparticleaccelerators

  • Knowledge of design for EMC

  • Demonstrated ability to guide work of a team of engineers and technicians in a project environment

  • Experience with circuit simulation, mechanical CAD and printed circuit board design software and tools

  • Expertisein troubleshooting and use of standard laboratory test equipment

  • A strong background in applying electrical safety principles in a setting that includes severe electrical hazards

  • Experience with vendor management

  • Familiar with DOE Directives related to responding to electrical safety-related events

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
