Job Title: Cyber Security Engineer (NWS 00864)
THIS POSITION IS SHORT TERM, MAX 1000 HOURS PER CALENDAR YEAR
North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer's mission. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physical, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day directions from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
The Computing Directorate has an opening for a Cybersecurity Engineer to independently and collaboratively perform a wide range of activities associated with supporting the Cyber Security Operations Center (CSOC) infrastructure. This position is in the Information Technology Solutions Division (ITSD) matrixed to the Cyber Security Program (CSP), in support of the Livermore Information Technology (LivIT) Program. The successful candidate will provide technical guidance to team members and manage multiple parallel tasks.
Essential Duties
- Protect enterprise systems and information by promptly responding to security threats and incidents, acting individually and as part of a team.
- Provide security monitoring and incident response support including troubleshooting and resolution of issues.
- Work closely with staff to ensure timely patching and mitigation of identified vulnerabilities.
- Support systems and cyber operations during off-hours as needed.
- Manage multiple parallel tasks, ensuring deadlines are met, leveraging team member skills.
- Manage multiple complex parallel tasks and priorities of customers and stakeholders, ensuring deadlines are met, while leveraging team member skills.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to team members in best practices and procedures.
- Lead CSOC initiatives across large networks both internal and external while providing advanced knowledge and reporting to senior management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience with Tenable Solutions Architecture, Design and Support.
- Knowledge of Audits and Assessments of Security Controls and developing corrective actions
- Experience with Project Management and ability to track project deliverables using Jira
- Experience with Penetration Testing assessments, tooling and methodology
- Effective written and verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills, ability to interact with all levels of management and staff.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, technical team environment with competing priorities and meet deadlines that are important to project success.
- Experience with approaching difficult problems with enthusiasm and creativity, and to change focus when necessary.
Desired Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Significant technical experience with Vulnerability Management process best practices.
- Significant knowledge and experience with red teaming and purple teaming activities.
- Significant experience in audits and how to engage with auditors.
- Proven advanced ability to provide innovative approaches and apply new technologies to tasks and projects that may not be well defined.
- Proven leadership skills and ability to provide detailed reports to senior management.
Special Requirements
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job-related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Government Clearance: Q (position will be cleared to this level). The selected applicants will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
