Summary of Job Duties:A pharmacist I works under minimal supervision to assess, prepare, dispense, and assist in coordinating all day-to-day dispensing functions of the pharmacy in a timely and accurate manner. The pharmacist will use their knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment through reviewing orders to ensure safe and effective medication therapy. They will evaluate appropriateness of dose, route, and formulation, allergies, medication interactions, monitoring, etc. The pharmacist will have frequent communication with other healthcare professionals as a drug information resource and provide educational information to ensure great patient care. They will report adverse drug events and medication safety events. They will document interventions in the medical record. The pharmacist will work as a team member to efficiently and accurately perform day-to-day work, along with any additional tasks or projects to help achieve departmental goals. Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy plus 1 year of experienceworking as a pharmacist (or pharmacy intern) in a retail or hospital setting.

  • Certification as a licensed Registered Pharmacist by the State of Arkansas or

  • eligible for licensure by the State of Arkansas

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy with a Pharm D. 2 years of applicable pharmacy experience

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares medications for dispensing by reviewing and interpreting prescribers' orders and detecting appropriateness of therapy, medication interactions, allergies, and other vital safety prescribing information

  • Verifies prescribers' orders once assessed and deemed appropriate/safe

  • Communicates with providers for clarification and correction of orders, labs, etc., as needed

  • Reviews and monitors drug therapies and advises/enters interventions

  • Expedites STAT order verification, preparation, and delivery

  • Answers/Receives phone calls promptly

  • Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling (patient-specific and auxiliary/cautionary labels) medications

  • Prepares and compounds extemporaneous products

  • Verifies and inspects technician/student preparation and labeling of medications before dispensing

  • Documents interventions as necessary for communication among staff

  • Inspects inventory for expiration dates before dispensing

  • Communicates and corrects technician/student mistakes promptly

  • Troubleshot and corrected drug delivery and equipment issues as needed

  • Process and dispense investigational medications

  • Assists prescribers with order entry

  • Serves patients and healthcare professionals by providing educational information and answering questions

  • Maintains records for controlled substances and removes outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory

  • Counsels patients on drug therapies

  • Completes nursing unit inspection promptly as assigned

  • Completes crash cart and ad hoc 'kit' preparation and verification promptly

  • Develops staff's pharmacological and operational knowledge by demonstrating and actively participating in the training of pharmacy staff, students, residents, interns, externs, and health care professionals

  • Contributes and works as a team to accomplish results

  • Completes pharmacy operational requirements by prioritizing and directing technician and student workflow, i.e., customers at the window, labels/orders, pyxis stock outs, cart fills, pyxis delivery, stocking, returns, etc.

  • Floor Pharmacist: Completes assignments/duties per their Clinical Supervisor; provides staffing support as needed

  • Prepares sterile admixtures using proper aseptic technique.

  • Prepares chemotherapy according to departmental policies and procedures

  • Prepares total parenteral nutrition (TPN) according to departmental policies and procedures

  • Verifies and inspects technician/student preparation and labeling of medications before dispensing

  • Inspects products used for compounding for expiration dating before dispensing

  • Assembles products for the preparation of parenteral medication

  • Maintains clean work surfaces, hoods, and classified spaces by using proper techniques and following policies and procedures

  • Troubleshoots, cleans, and maintains equipment as necessary

  • Adheres to the UAMS patient safety plan

  • Attends safety huddle as assigned

  • Promotes a safe working environment

  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control protocols

  • Contribute to patient safety by participating in safe work practices and providing input on safety concerns

  • Participates in emergencies, i.e., Code Blue, Code Pink, Code Green, etc.

  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations

  • Contribute their best effort to accomplish common goals

  • Works as an effective team member with all employees, colleagues, patients, and guests

  • Maintains professional behavior and mutual respect toward all employees, colleagues, patients, and guests

  • Adheres to the UAMS Code of Conduct

  • Adheres to institutional and departmental policies and procedures

  • Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Food and Drug Administration, and other regulatory standards

  • Adopts and participates in optimizing procedures and practices to improve work processes, enhance guest satisfaction, and reduce waste and costs.

  • Recommends and participates in improving processes to optimize efficiency, safety, and related workflow/workload

  • Participates in institutional and departmental surveys for process assessment and improvement

  • Partake in performance evaluations

  • Fulfills lead pharmacist duties as assigned

  • Maintains knowledge of the hospital pharmacy through continuing education

  • Maintains knowledge of existing and new legislation, laws, regulations, and advises management on needed actions

  • Seeks opportunities to grow professionally through opportunities for advancement, i.e., certifications, etc.

  • Assists/leads departmental projects to attain departmental goals or optimize workflow

  • Other duties as assigned.
