Title: Youth Development Summer Health Care Aide and Lifeguard (continuous post)

Classification: 0003 Seasonal/Fair, limited to 67 days per calendar year if working over 14 hours/week

Appointment: Temporary, Hourly/Time card position, 0-40+ hours per week

Pay Range: Depending on education, qualifications, experience, and position type:

  1. 4-H Camp Health Care Aide, $20-$26 an hour
  2. Lifeguard, $15.25-$17.25 an hour
About the Positions

This is a continuous posting for the Extension Department of Youth Development. This posting is for seasonal roles like health care aides and lifeguards, and similar roles. These roles provide flexible, high-impact assistance across key programming, administrative and logistical functions of the department. The primary purpose of these positions is to contribute to safe and healthy environments during youth programming. These positions are not eligible for overtime and hours are worked mainly on a specific camp, fair or other site location.

Location and Work environment:

Positions located across Minnesota, based on health care and life guard needs. Positions may include work both indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, etc. Interest in available locations and roles will be collected in the required job screening questionnaire.

Work Schedule:

Weekly work schedule is flexible and will be 0 - 40+ hours per week, depending on the program needs. Work may take place during the work day, evenings, or weekends. Some positions may require overnight work arrangements. Work schedule may include travel to various sites for programming. A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

Positions:(1) 4-H Camp Health Care Aide

Evaluate and treat campers and staff for minor injuries and illnesses, ensure implementation of medication policies and procedures at camp, keep a log of visits, and identify health problems serious enough to require a physician's attention. Pay range: $20-$26 an hour, depending on certifications and qualifications. May work up to 40+ hours per week of event, including pre- and post-event. Works up to 15 hours per day, staggered throughout the event. May include overnights at camp. A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

Responsibilities may include:

Under the directive of the Extension Educator, or their designee:

  • Keep an accurate log of daily medications and first-aid treatments
  • Accept all medications on arrival day and return medications on pick-up day; distribute medicine to participants for self-administration throughout camp following the Medication administration policy and procedures for Minnesota 4-H programs
  • Provide basic medical treatment for campers and staff during the camp, including pre-existing conditions and emergency first aid
  • Stay on the camp premises for the duration of camp
  • Communicate effectively with the camp director, 4-H staff, campers, and camp families.
  • Transport or accompany any youth or adult that requires a physician's attention
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • Required to complete job screening questionnaire to be considered for any roles (https://z.umn.edu/healthlifeguardscreen)
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Current CPR and first aid certifications
  • Ability to get to remote locations on the camp property over rough terrain
  • Ability to keep accurate health records and reports
  • Ability to handle stressful medical situations and maintain confidentiality and privacy during medical situations
Preferred qualifications:
  • Current EMT, LPN, or RN license with the State of Minnesota
  • Experience working with school-aged youth is desired
(2) Lifeguard

Ensure a safe and positive waterfront environment as part of a 4-H activity. Pay range: $15.25-$17.25 an hour. May work up to 40+ hours per week for training, set-up, active duty and clean up. A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

Responsibilities may include:

Under the directive of the Extension Educator, or their designee:

  • Supervise swimmers during swimming programs
  • Conduct swim assessments of youth and staff prior to their participation in any pool or lake activities. (eg. Rope test, participants swim the width of the pool by the rope between shallow and deep end or between docks/markers in a lake in a safe depth to evaluate swim ability. Any swim stroke can be used for the test to show their ability.) Ensure that youth are comfortable in the water at a safe depth before being allowed to go into deeper water. (If they do not pass, restrict non-swimmers to shallow water or designated alternate on land location.)
  • Enforce event/camp rules and regulations; model standards for conduct as they pertain to staff and youth
  • Foster a culture of belonging for all youth, staff, and families by embracing a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and learning styles.
  • Monitor designated areas to recognize signs of danger
  • Warn swimmers regarding unsafe situations (i.e. weather, currents, water crafts in area, health related concerns, etc). Prohibit swimming in unsafe conditions
  • Attend orientation to the role with the Extension educator or designee prior to the start of the 4-H activity
  • Report any injuries or incidents using the Incident Report form
  • Other duties as assigned
Required qualifications:
  • Required to complete job screening questionnaire to be considered for any roles (https://z.umn.edu/healthlifeguardscreen)
  • Must be at least 16 years old by the start date
  • Valid/current certifications required: Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid (Lifeguard certification must be from a Minnesota Department of Health approved certification provider)
  • Be physically able to conduct emergency procedures, including water rescues
  • Have visual ability to recognize hazards in the swimming setting as well as physical symptoms of youth injury or illness
  • Have auditory ability to respond appropriately to hazards and any youth concerns
  • Ability to inspire confidence and calm in the face of a crisis
  • Must be able to spend large amounts of time outdoors or in an indoor pool area
Preferred qualification:
  • Experience working with school-aged youth is desired
Qualifications

Additional Requirements/Working Conditions for All positions:
  • A willingness to become familiar with and work within the philosophy and guidelines of University of Minnesota Extension, the Minnesota 4-H program, and the local 4-H program
  • Must complete all required trainings, including but not limited to Safety of Minors and Civil Rights training
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Valid driver's license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance. Mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with University policy
  • Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 20 pounds
  • Must be able to stand for 90 minutes at a time or sit for 90 minutes at a time. Some days will require hours of standing or sitting
  • Must complete University of Minnesota payroll paperwork, including completing an in-person I-9 (identification verification process), and have a successful completion of a background check with motor vehicle record review before the first day of work.
