Overview
Hudson Valley Credit Union is currently recruiting for the position of Small Business Lending Underwriter. Primary Function: Make independent loan decisions by approving, denying and counter- offering small business loans in accordance with loan policies and guidelines for traditional loans and SBA (Small Business Administration) loans $500,000.00 in exposure and below. Serve as the primary resource for employee and member inquiries and is the first point of contact for escalated issues. Conduct quality assurance to ensure work is completed per procedure.
Responsibilities
- Make independent credit recommendations by reviewing, denying, or counter offering Small Business loan requests of $500,000 and less in alignment with prudent underwriting practices, member needs, and the Credit Union's risk tolerance. Clearly communicate decisions and document all loan exceptions.
- Assign accurate risk ratings based on financial trends, identified risks, mitigants, and any policy exceptions, supported by financial spreads, investigative data, global cash flow (when applicable), and covenant compliance analysis.
- Recommend appropriate loan structures that balance borrower needs with sound credit risk management and Credit Union guidelines.
- Complete underwriting assignments within required timelines while maintaining high accuracy, strong analytical quality, and minimal need for supervisory revisions.
- Analyze borrower financials, including business financial statements, tax returns, bank statements, and cash flow, to determine creditworthiness and repayment capacity.
- Evaluate guarantor strength and assess global cash flow when relevant to ensure comprehensive risk assessment.
- Review and verify loan application packages, ensuring documentation completeness, business viability, and compliance with underwriting standards.
- Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with internal lending policies, regulatory requirements, and fair lending standards.
- Work with external loan servicing partners to submit, review, and close SBA Express, 504 and SBA 7(a) loans.
- Maintain and monitor the commercial loan portfolio by completing annual reviews, renewals, extensions, and modifications for existing borrowing relationships
- Adhere to all Credit Union policies, procedures, and regulatory agency requirements. Participate in all required and recommended training and development including, but not limited to, Bank Secrecy Act training (BSA) and demonstrate attained knowledge. Participate on Credit Union teams, projects and strategic initiatives when the opportunity arises. Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required
- Minimum 3 years Consumer or Commercial Loan Underwriting required
