Responsibilities

MasTec Communications Groupis seeking a full-time OSP Designer in support of a large-scale telecommunications project for both OSP Fiber and Copper Networks.

The position requires experience with outside plant in aerial, buried, and/or underground facilities, with a thorough knowledge of all issues related to federal, state, or local government permitting, as well as pole and conduit licensing procedures with utility permitting agencies. The OSP Engineer must work cohesively with the Engineering PM.

In addition, you will:

  • Conduct field site surveys to collect accurate data on existing telecom infrastructure, equipment, pathways, and environmental conditions
  • Capture detailed measurements of poles, handholes, conduits, fiber routes, equipment locations, and building entry points.
  • Document site characteristics (photos, GPS coordinates, notes) using company-approved data collection tools or mobile applications
  • Perform visual inspections of aerial and underground routes to identify clearances, obstructions, rightofway constraints, and potential construction challenges.
  • Communicate discrepancies, missing information, or site issues to design engineers and project managers.
  • Observe and comply with all safety protocols, including traffic safety, PPE requirements, and utilityspecific guidelines.
  • Operate field tools and devices, such as laser range finders, height sticks, tablets, GPS units, measuring wheels, and cameras.
  • Upload and organize collected data into project folders or internal systems for engineering use.
  • Travel to multiple field locations within a defined region to support ongoing project needs.
  • Prepare detailed CAD drawings and design packages for fiber optic, wireless, and broadband network projects.
  • Convert field data, survey notes, and redlines into accurate construction drawings and asbuilt documentation
  • Develop permit drawings for municipalities, DOT, railroads, utilities, and other governing bodies
  • Maintain drawing consistency by adhering to company and client CAD standards, templates, and layer conventions.
  • Perform quality checks on drawings to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project requirements.
  • Organize project drawing files, ensuring proper version control, naming conventions, and documentation structure.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and field teams to clarify design data and resolve drafting issues.

Qualifications

About You:

  • Strong attention to detail for accurate measurement and documentation.
  • Ability to interpret basic engineering drawings, maps, site plans, and utility records, redlines, field notes, and design specifications.
  • Basic understanding of utility locating methods and rightofway considerations.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills to identify site constraints or discrepancies
  • Ability to work independently in outdoor environments and in varying weather conditions
  • Time management and organizational skills to support multiple site visits per day and to meet deadlines and handle multiple drafting assignments.
  • Basic technical communication skills to report findings to designers, engineers, and project managers.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regionally to field sites.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of drafting standards, layer management, symbology, and annotation best practices.
  • Willingness to learn clientspecific CAD standards, templates, and telecom design workflows
  • Proficient in Microsoft office (Excel, Word, Outlook), PDF's, OneDrive, Google Earth (KMZ's).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field is preferred, OR Telecomm, Engineering, or Drafting completed courses and diploma from a technical school or community college or related experience
  • Qualify on pre-employment screening
  • Must pass a drug test
  • Obtain satisfactory results from a background/employment history investigation and drug screening

Work environment:

  • Will work outdoors at various field sites, including streets, utility easements, customer properties, and ROW areas.
  • Frequently exposed to weather conditions, uneven terrain, traffic, and active construction environments.
  • Requires regular travel between multiple locations, often independently, to collect site data.
  • Will work remote in a deskbased setting, using CAD software for extended periods.
  • May occasionally visit field sites or attend meetings to validate design details or gather clarifications.
  • Collaborates closely with field supervisors and project managers in a structured project workflow.
