The mission of the
UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy. Our faculty, staff, students and administrators work collaboratively to build and foster an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and accessible to people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and beliefs.
The school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Enrollment includes about 1,000 undergraduates and 130 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. | Position Summary |
The Hussman School of Journalism and Media seeks a full-time Administrative Assistant to provide essential operational and administrative support within the Dean's Office. This role serves as a central resource for facilities coordination, senior leadership support, front desk operations, and schoolwide administrative services.
A major focus of the position is facilities coordination. The Administrative Assistant acts as the primary liaison with university facilities teams, managing building operations, space and occupancy records, office assignments, access control, room reservations, and facilities service requests. The role also supports renovations, capital projects, and works with campus transportation services to manage visitor and employee parking passes.
The position provides comprehensive administrative support to senior leadership, including calendar management, travel coordination, reimbursements, purchasing card processing, correspondence, and assistance with meetings, events, and special projects. The Administrative Assistant collaborates closely with the Dean's Executive Assistant to ensure seamless office operations and provides backup support as needed.
As the front desk representative for the Dean's Suite, the Administrative Assistant serves as the first point of contact for visitors, manages inquiries, oversees reception and shared office spaces, and maintains organized administrative systems and workflows.
Additional responsibilities include managing package processing, supply inventories, records retention, and serving as the Access Request Coordinator for non-student campus systems. The incumbent leverages strong organizational skills, discretion, and sound judgment, along with clear and professional communication, to effectively support diverse stakeholders in a fast paced environment with frequent interruptions.
This position is 100% on-site and is located in the Office of the Dean. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |
| Management Preferences |
- Working knowledge of MS Word, Outlook (including calendaring functions), Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
- Demonstrated capacity for problem solving. |
