Job Description:
This position focuses on creating clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation including standard operating procedures (SOPs), runbooks, system documentation, and process workflows. The Senior Technical Writer collaborates closely with software engineers, systems engineers, IT teams, and program stakeholders to translate complex technical concepts into structured documentation that supports system deployment, integration, and ongoing operations.
Operating under general supervision, this role requires the ability to analyze complex and sometimes ambiguous inputs, evaluate varying factors, and independently determine appropriate documentation structure and delivery methods. The Senior Technical Writer contributes to project and operational milestones by ensuring documentation is accurate, complete, and available to support system releases, audit readiness, and operational effectiveness.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Technical Documentation Development & Process Standardization
- Develop, write, and maintain technical documentation including policies and procedures, system manuals, user guides, API documentation, SOPs, runbooks, and work instructions
- Translate complex IT systems, software functionality, and engineering concepts into clear, structured documentation for technical and operational audiences
- Create process documentation, job aids, and workflow materials supporting IT operations, system deployment, and engineering processes
- Develop process flow diagrams, system workflows, and value stream maps to visualize current and future state processes
- Analyze technical specifications, system designs, and operational inputs to synthesize accurate and actionable documentation
- Ensure documentation reflects current system configurations, releases, and operational practices
- Maintain documentation repositories, ensuring version control, traceability, and accessibility
- Cross-Functional Collaboration, Compliance & Validation
- Collaborate with subject matter experts across IT, engineering, quality, and program teams to gather and validate technical content
- Conduct interviews and working sessions to clarify complex or incomplete inputs
- Ensure documentation aligns with internal standards and applicable regulatory requirements, including AS9100, NIST framework and SOX compliance
- Support configuration management and document control processes, including versioning and approval workflows
- Participate in documentation reviews, audits, and validation activities to ensure accuracy and standardization
- Align documentation deliverables with system releases, deployments, and program milestones
- Support stakeholders in accessing and using documentation effectively
- Documentation Standards & Continuous Improvement
- Apply established documentation standards, templates, and style guides to ensure consistency and quality
- Identify opportunities to improve documentation processes, tools, and workflows
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by capturing and formalizing updated IT and engineering processes
- Contribute to scalable documentation practices, including modular and reusable content strategies
- Perform editorial reviews and quality checks to ensure clarity, accuracy, and completeness
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor"s degree in Technical Communication, Engineering, Computer Science, English, or a related field.
- 5-8 years of experience in technical writing supporting IT systems, software, aerospace, defense, or engineering environments.
- Experience working in regulated environments (e.g., AS9100, NIST, SOX) and familiarity with process documentation and continuous improvement methodologies is preferred.
- Master"s degree with 3-6 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of additional professional experience.
- Exposure to ERP or PLM systems (e.g., SAP, Windchill) preferred.
- Strong technical writing and documentation development skills within IT, software, or engineering environments
- Experience developing SOPs, runbooks, and process documentation
- Ability to translate complex technical information into clear, user-friendly documentation
- Knowledge of IT systems, software platforms, and/or aerospace communication technologies
- Familiarity with process documentation, workflow mapping, and value stream concepts
- Understanding of documentation lifecycle management, configuration control, and document governance
- Working knowledge of regulatory and quality standards such as AS9100, NIST framework, and SOX compliance.
- Experience with documentation tools (MadCap Flare, Adobe FrameMaker, Oxygen XML Editor, or similar), collaboration platforms (Confluence, SharePoint, Notion, or similar), version
control systems (Git, GitLab, Bitbucket, or similar), and issue tracking tools (Jira or similar)
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and quality
- Ability to manage multiple documentation projects in a fast-paced environment.
