Posting Summary
The Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation ( CAIT) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to support research and implementation activities in advanced transportation infrastructure systems. The position will focus on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies across the full lifecycle of structures-from design and construction to monitoring, maintenance, and asset management. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of next-generation digital infrastructure frameworks that combine experimental testing, structural health monitoring ( SHM), physics-based modeling, and data-driven analytics to enable predictive, performance-based decision-making and improve infrastructure safety, resilience, and lifecycle performance.
The candidate is expected to demonstrate a leadership role in forming and maintaining productive working relationships, as well as the ability to work autonomously in the prescribed duties and cooperatively with CAIT faculty and staff. The position also requires the candidate to train and supervise graduate and undergraduate students, both in the laboratory and in modeling analysis.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Structural Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Strong background in structural mechanics and analysis
  • Experience with the following:

    1. Structural health monitoring (SHM)
    2. Finite element modeling (e.g., ABAQUS, SAP2000, ANSYS)
    3. Machine learning / AI (Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch)



  • Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Strong programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar)
  • Good communication and presentation skills, and a strong proficiency in technical writing and editing

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with AI-driven model updating and calibration of structural systems, including learning-based or optimization approaches
  • Strong background in integrating physics-based models with machine learning for predictive structural analysis
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted design and decision-making, supporting engineers in evaluating design alternatives
